Hello would anyone be able to share things to watch out for when looking at 044’s and 440’s a couple examples of each have been offered to me locally but I really have no experience with them? I know the basics but I’m talking about specific issues with these saws. Both ones I’m interested in are one owner homeowner low hour examples
I already have a 400 and 461R and think a 044/440 would fit in nicely
Or alternatively does a 400 pretty much beat them out? Thanks

A 044/440 isn't gonna do anything for you having those 2 saws. I think a 400 cuts basically the same as a 440 with a 20-24" bar and a 461 out snorts both..obviously.

I was wondering that. My 400’s really impressed me but I just like buying/trying saws in all honesty. Would the same be true if they were ported?

It applies.

Someone may tell you a story from the OPE book of unicorns about how one or the other did this or that and it was a divine experience and that one is way better than the other...

If you want it just to try it knock yourself out, if you're in to collecting chainsaws good examples of 440s and their variants get more sparse with time...snag one if you want it.

Every time I’m at the OPE library, that book is always checked out.

I thought I'd posted this a day or two ago but evidently forgot to hit the button.

Piston and cylinder from Maint Sup have been installed. The saw runs much better and acceleration is more what I would expect, but it still seems a little lackadaisical with the 20" bar buried in oak.

Any thoughts?

I’m not a collector but more of an accumulator of saws it seems. Trying to build a fleet of good saws and learn repair as I go along

The newer saws have their obvious advantages if you actually use them on the regular, but a 440 was a well liked saw by many users in every phase of killing trees, if you want one..buy it.

I've got an 028 that along with several saws were given to me .It was a ground saw for a tree service company but seldom used as they had better saws .That's the problem when you acquire lot of saws it's hard to keep them all exercised .In at least 15 years of having that 028 I've never used it .

If your just collecting and fooling around I'd absolutely pick them up! Just like any antiquated design they're easy to work on and get parts for, nice to just pick up handles and spikes and gaskets just about anywhere. Tons of helpful information from members here.
Practical? The good Lord only blessed me with 2 hands ( I can only use 1 chainsaw at a time), so if your depending on equipment for work ; warranties and a new dealer design might be smarter .

The 028 might be considered to be old to some .You have to remember it's a 3 cuber not an old school redwood slayer . With just standard maintaince it should last almost forever .Besides all that if you are a selective buyer you could round up a half dozen of that model less expensively that just one of the new fangled computer contraptions people are willing to shell out a grand for .Then can't even work on the damned things because it takes high tech equipment which only a dealer has .

Well I’m convinced I’ll go look at the 044 I appreciate the enabling, how do I tell if it’s an oem cylinder on the saw? I realize different markets bring different prices but any ballpark value on these saws? I’m really getting why you guys call this hobby CAD haha

My slant fin non-decomp 044 has stihl cast right in the top of the cylinder. Pretty much everything stihl makes has its symbol or name cast on it.
I paid 175.00 for one with a bad piston, but any where from 75- 375 would be my ballpark for a used saw. If its like new condition or NOS people pay 800 for them ,but I'd verify any claim of such a saw.

Oem cylinders have a letter stamped in a machined flat on the top of the cylinder. To see this you have to take the top cover off though.
They also have wording such as ‘mahle’ on the bottom flange but this is often difficult to see behind the flywheel

Low hour one owner saws are likely to have the original parts on em.

There was a sweet 044 near me on FB the other day listed for $700. It sold within a few hours.

The 044, whether it be a 10mm slant fin or 12mm version, along with the Husky 372 were the benchmark standard for 70cc class saws for many years (and still are in some circles).

Anyone who poo poos an 044 hasn't spent much time behind one using it the way it was designed to be used. Same goes for a 372.

They led the way.

It is only a 47cc saw. LOL

Same results with either coil?

And the chain/sprocket setup will obviously also have an effect on the power. .325 / 7 tooth was the common one, though it was also offered in 3/8s / 8 tooth.
