Figured I'd post here for all you Stihl aficionados a couple saws I got running today, 041AV and MS440. The old hard nose bar has the Stihl logo engraved on it, anyone have any ideas on restoring it without wrecking the engraving?

Electrolysis is supposed to work good.I have a few bars that i'm going to try to restore this winter.Same thing they are engraved.

I've heard good things about soda blasting, even thought about sending it to a chrome shop, but not sure how that would work out.

I would go the electrolysis route also. You wouldn't need much of a tank to de-rust in for that bar's size.

I am changing the case a on a ms170. The old case has this red plug and case has the hole with no plug and the oil pump pushing oil out of it. Mediacat doesn't show the plug so how do I get the one out of old case without tearing it up ?

Replace this plug with a grub screw, part no. 9134 381 1230. Coat the screw with a little bit of Dirko HT and screw it in. It will screw it`s own threads. Leave it out of the hole about 1/16" and you`re done.

Thanks, I turned down a wooden dowel and drove it in. I also had to drill the oil passage from the chain side in to the oil port from the pump on this Hutzl case as it liked a quarter inch being deep enough.

Plastic rain gutter makes a good long skinny shallow soak tank. End caps are cheap and readily available. Don't use the supplied gasket.

Bar cleaned up OK, used ATF/acetone mixture and good old fashioned elbow grease with scotch brite pad. Left some of the minor pitting, I think if I used anything harder like a sander, logo would be lost. Does any one know about when this saw was made? Can't help but be a bit curious is all. Saw is actually in pretty good shape for being unrestored, runs quite well too.

Saw this baby on ebay today. Pretty sweet shape, never seen one in person.

*s-word I'd have had that in a heartbeat, that's the top of my want list!

Out of curiosity what's a fully rebuilt 090 AV worth over there? I've got 3 I'm considering selling and I'd rather sell them to forum members

They go for peanuts anymore really, but I'd take them off of your hands if need be :)

Kidding of course, but I see them all over the map. 1500 seems to be a pretty good price for a good-looking one anymore according to ebay.

Definitely let me know if you're going to sell!!!!!!

I will do, I've currently got 3 non runners in and a shed load of spare parts, I've a week off coming up soon so I'm going to do a full rebuild on all 3, genuine bearings, seals, caber rings and a carb rebuild. Always said they were my investment, and I'm buying a new motor so it'd be nice to have the saws pay for some of that.

If I got 1500 for them I'd post them over the pond for free, as that's a good price

You're definitely doing it right. I was ordering some parts at my local dealer and 090 pistons and the cylinder kits are dropping in price. I hope Stihl isn't cleaning house.

Mine aren't any beauty queens but they run well.

I think he said the piston and cylinder kits were 379 so they're still not giving them away, but cheaper than they were.
