Since you mentioned it I think I have a couple of cooked 029's in a box some place. They didn't do real well for a couple of tree services .Just got them out of a bind for a while .I have robbed parts out of that box or boxes every so often .

I was under the impression (mistaken?) that both 2 bolt and 3 bolt (dogleg) style coils would fit an 084. Maybe there were two case half versions with the respective bosses for either/or style of coil? Pretty sure there was for the 1122 saws right about the same time as those ignitions went through a gazillion changes. Saying "an 066 coil" is like saying "a gasket for a blue car". LOL

I really have no idea because I don't have an 066 and only did some simple fixes on a few ,nothing major .Fact the 084 I'm not certain if it's even been started in the last 5 years .Get real how many times in Ohio do you really need a big gun. Saying that I do have plans later in the summer to give it and the other big guns a run just to see what or how they compare in bigger wood .Fun but really you don't use them much which is why they last forever .

Stop the presses hold the phone .I just caught something on those vid clips .The first one showed an under reving engine. The second on shows a better running engine with the 881 coil .I'd say by that it is a self advancing coil that won't advance .I had that on either an 042 or 048 Stihl with a an SEM coil .Either that or the first clip had a coil from a concrete saw .

Picked this up yesterday in trade for a used Rancher PTO cover. Was only missing the recoil assembly and had a torn out top AV buffer. Had a spare of each on hand.

Twiddled some knobs and it is running now.

A sweet example, Cory. Looks new. And it obviously begs the question..., how did you happen to have a spare buffer and recoil just laying around for it?

I took 3 saws to drop a very big and bad codominate dead Maple today. An 038Mag, 044 (10mm), and an MS441. 20210517_173916.jpg
There was a ranger there to help and I let him run the 044 and the 038mag . He was definitely impressed with the 044s lght weight and feel. I explained how the 044 really replaced the 038mag in the stihl line up and how the Ms441 came next but was disappointing in sales and discontinued.
I was a good day to run some classic Stihls.

That 038M looks good wearing a new skirt.

Thanks Poge.

I stripped a couple of 031’s down some years ago and still have a bucket of goodies. Slowly pick through it when they come through needing odds and ends. Pretty sure buffers are NLA through the dealer last time I checked. I ordered some cheap knockoffs through Farmertec, though. We’ll see when they arrive. Next up is to find a couple of HU checks. I have a couple that are problematic. I see that there are aftermarket (Walbro) carb options but am leery.

Going to try and rescue a rough 361 next. Never been into/run one before.

I just don't think of you as having a stash of Stihl stuff laying around. Homelite goes without sayin'!

Can't help with the HU dilemma, but have had good luck with Proline aftermarket buffers from Sawzilla. Fuel lines and other small stuff as well. Was even pretty impressed with one of these for reviving a buddies PL4 not too long ago. May be worth checking into if you haven't given em a look see yet. https://sawzillaparts.com/proline-c...-big-red-xl12-nikasil-chainsaw-a69714-a69715/

And I think you'll find the MS361 to be a very worthwhile project no matter how rough it is. May be one you'll end up keeping for the occasional firewood production duty work vs. just breaking out those Homies for weekend fun cuttin'. Very capable and extremely comfortable saws to run. They'll get some work done.

I bit the bullet and ordered a 361 Huztl/Farmertec case for $53 after watching Walt @afleetcommand building one of the kit's a few years back. Ran across another vid by another guy a little later which seemed to confirm his initial observations that it was a fairly decent case worthy of one's consideration to extend the useful life of a MS361. Would be interesting to know how his (Walt's) effort has held up over the last couple years. I rebuilt a 372 with a FT case a couple years ago and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and absence of any issues. That saw was OEM otherwise (as this 361 will be) and is still running strong with zero issues.

I think odd running and fuel vent issues have side lined Walts 361 build. Same issues I've had with others. No case issues though.

Looks like I don't have the right tools to remove a 291 carb o_O

I guess they felt it necessary to require the smallest socket OD possible or something. 8mm nuts right? I'm going to be blocking the throttle rod in its guide, any recommendations? A spot of glue at the top came to mind. Kinda surprised they haven't fixed this issue yet.
