Replace the stock outlet with two slanted pipes and make it a four-shooter?!

That about how I do it... if I’m going aggressive. I already had a large torch tank set so it was easy to pick up some silver soldier and a Chinese jewelry torch of eBay.

That mod may need a cover/deflector to direct gasses/sound to the sides to be bearable to the operator. o_O
May be but I stood behind the saw opposite of the direction of the noise...

So what I did was to close the bores in the inner shield that were reachable through the outlets to prevent a direct unbent stream of gases. That did help a bit but by far not enough so I closed the second outlet all together but widened the main one a little further.

This way the muffler now serves my 115iH which is one of my main work saws. The noise is OK now and the saw has gained significant power.

Argh still with the idle issues. This thing runs fine unless it gets on its pto side and then it wants to race. Still passing p&v but picks up idle on the right side when flipped back up from there it acts like it wants to stall which it does some times but most times it recovers and returns to a steady idle.

Dumb idea but could the fuel filter be trapped in a weird position that causes it to suck some air when you flip it on it’s side?

How bad does the idle pick up? They are a bit fussy to tune on the L jet. All 3 9000/9010 that I have ran when you flipped them around were changing idle a bit. It’s not a airleak because the high side tune holds. I think it’s more carb related or fuel in the long intake tract puddling. Not really a issue I guess, just something I noticed.

Intermediate progress to keep you all happy.

crankcase_halves.jpg

The crank case is split into parts the broken crank removed and thrown onto the scrap heap.

carb_before.jpg

I did the Poleman mod to the carb. Removed the left idle jet which was pretty easy once I had a pair of pliers grinded for the task.
Widened the lower bore behind the jet by drilling with a .55mm drill and then epoxied the additional fuel bore in the topmost brass plug.

carb_after.jpg

This is the carb's state before re-plugging the idle jet.

Finally I did a little porting to the cylinder, some sanding still to be done:

I did the Poleman mod to the carb.

...Does Poleman have a thread out there on how to do these carbs? I’ve wanted to learn for a while now...

Looking at micro hand drills and drill bits right now. Which style are you using? Wonder what Rich uses?

Anything else special I need to do his mods besides epoxy?

This is pretty much what I use. Just lacking the pic of a small hammer and flat punch to put jet back in an JB Weld.
I use a very simple pin vice as I’ve used others but noted a wobble in the bit when drilling and would get a larger hole than I wanted. It’s make sure it runs straight.... also I like that I can feel when it goes through so I can try not to go through the membrane on the back. (Which doesn’t seem to affect anything if you do unless you push it out into the idle feed chamber where it will plug a hole or two and you’ll pull your hair out until you figure out what’s going on)BDD4436D-4183-4F24-8178-5EA79527AA25.jpeg

That back (filter area) of the one in the centre at the top of the photo looks like a 7900 and curved where the choke come out? The top right looks like a 9000. The red on seems like a jonsered to me. But they are at £50 and 40 miles from me. They have been on for a while.

PS-8700 project:

The new crankshaft has arrived as well as a pair of Solo spike bars

8700_crank_&_spikes.jpg

The outer spike bar was missing from the saw so this was a good opportunity to go away from the very small non-US Dolmar spikes.
But then I'm not a fan of those porn-style spike bars so the Solos seem to be a good compromise:

solo_&_dolmar_spike.jpg

Solo vs. Dolmar spike bar: The Solo is bigger but needs a bit of grinding to fit on the Dolmar crankcase.

And since the Solo crankshaft has 2 mm lager stroke than the Dolmar, grinding inside the crankcase was needed too, to make room for the lager counterweights:

This work was surprisingly easy to be done and took me less than an hour.

And now for something completely different: An old original manual I found on ebay has arrived today:

Original early 70's print in quite a good shape.
