Have a 25 and a 110 in pieces right now, so fun times ahead!

So heres my Poulan. One of them. Grey and black 3400. Going to a new home soon with a guy I work with. Noticing it smokes a wee bit more than it should, and I'm seeing a little oil stain on the muffler. Assuming it has an impulse oiler, since it oils while it idles.
Is there a check valve or any likely culprit I should look for? Dont want to send it down the road not right.0319192123_HDR.jpg 0319192123a_HDR.jpg

And I scored this sweet little 25DA in a dead saw pile last week. Main issues right now are fuel cap duckbill is missing(anybody got a part number for that db valve and possibly a keeper that holds it on), air filter crumbled(no problem to make one), fuel line, and possibly some carb work.
Got a decent 14" bar and a pretty much new low kickback chain. Dont care for safety chains much, but will live with it til I wear it out. 0319192133_HDR.jpg 0319192133a_HDR.jpg

I get my duck bill valves off eBay, 10 at a time, cheaper when you buy more.

Assuming it's got an oiler similar to the S25 it could be just a faulty gasket on the pump .If memory serves it's a cork gasket that just vibrates itself apart .
That air filter on the S25 is just a synthetic sponge .Don't run that thing without one because it will suck in trash and clog the reed valve which is right under the carb .I know for a fact because I have one in my shed somebody did that and sprung the reed and I've never been able to get it to run right .That little stinker caught fire on me twice and I'm done with it .This one has became a donor if I ever need parts for the other two I have .

Now my speech on the S25 and variations .They sold as many of these things to tree trimmers as they did to home owners .In the day you had maybe 4 trimmers saws .This one ,Mini Mac ,Homelite xl2 and Stihl 020 av top handle .This and the Stihl were top of the line but the Poulan was far cheaper ,weighed almost the same and cut just as fast .
Little pot lickers vibrate so bad they will make your hands go numb in about ten minutes .I tamed mine down with about 4 wraps of high voltage rubber electrical tape with a couple of plastic over that on the handles which helped some .
The early versions with a points ignition will run forever if you don't straight gas them . I think my first one dates back to 1973-74 and still runs fine . One of only two saws I ever bought brand new

Adding to your story, unless the chrome starts coming out of the bore, that will also stop them dead in their tracks. I think mine has points, would have to look in the cardboard box and see.

:) --just be thankful that mini 130 is not a 110 or 120 .You'd really love them:eek:

I didnt really ever pay attention to which it was all these years. I was surprised when I seen 130. I wasnt even going to clean it up, I despised it so much. But I will.

Dads 3300 on a tear down I did for him many years ago. av's, intake boot, lines, etc. Normal up keep over the years. Topend always looked great.

I've seen more McCullochs lose the chrome than Poulans .I'd imagine that goes back to the boycott of hard Rhodesian chrome which was also marked the steady decline in chrome bumpers on automobiles .It probably ushered in the era of hard nickle plating ( Nikasil ) .

You know that basic design of the S25 remained for a long time .The later small saws sold by Sears and Roebuck were plastic and not as durable but they did fine if they weren't abused .I've got a couple in the shed I just haven't had a chance to rebuild the carbs on .Some claim they were only designed to last 20 hours but I doubt that is accurate .Of course you could take a $1000 Stihl and turn it into a doorstop if you beat the tar out of it in less than 20 hours .

My first saw was a red craftsman 2.3av, still have it, all metal minus the handle and hand guard and it still runs.

1994 micro 2000 33cc TH I bought new. After the 25 S25 saw series. Not as strong in the cut like the 38cc older ones but I like them.

Before and after cleaning. Got back from dad. I had gave it to him to replace that dang mac. Now he uses a 180 with easy start I gave him fr the trim saw.

The little rascals are light as a feather .Even though it is not a true top handle you can lean out and one hand them if you have to,which I really try not to but some times you have no choice .The thumb oiler on mine broke and I just haven't taken the time to carve another one out of hard nylon on the milling machine. On the to-do list which seems to be getting longer . Mine was a $2 special at an auction, bad condenser .

Ok kids, pop quiz.
Let me start out by saying I WAS going to replace the fuel line on the S25DA.
However, I had mashed the manual oiler out of curiosity last night, and noticed there was now a bar oil stain on the board I sat it on. So, since I had to open it up anyways, I just tore it down. Looks like the leak is coming from the pump housing. Got it apart, and pull the diaphragm cover off the pump. Guess whats missing?0320192109.jpg

Right you are sir!
Thos would have caused AT LEAST two things.
1. Automatic oiler wouldnt have worked very well. Probably why it's got a couple of hot spots on the bar.
2. Wouldnt have run too well, as it would have gotten a bad air leak from the impulse port thru the 1/8" vent hole in the pump housing.
Just wonder why nobody found that, since it would have to have been leaking bar oil out from the pump vent hole, at least when the manual oiler was pressed.
Know where there is another one just like this, only locked down. Will go see him tomorrow.
