I will probably keep about 30 heifers over the next three years. Still kicking around getting a couple of akaushi as well for personal consumption of their offspring crossed with angus.

One of our best cows calved today. We had been keeping a close eye on her thankfully. The calf wound up with its legs up and its head twisted under it in a weird way. It was plain to see that it was smothering....even though she was in high weeds. I got to it and cleaned its mouth and nose out so it could breathe. Sat it right side up and let her start cleaning it up. It's amazing that these damn things ain't extinct.

Unfortunately I lost a good cow a couple months ago that calved late. One of those smelled, didn't see, type of situations. Still pissed at myself about it even I thought spring calving was done and with work I would not have been able to do anything about it in time.
Little thing on cattle scales, saw one advertised for $1300 a couple days ago couple hours from me. I looked at the load cells and control they were using and found straight from company the kit was $229 with free shipping. Trying to figure out how a little bit of metal and untreated white oak can justify the price they were asking. I might order the kit and weld up a frame before fall.

I've been threatening to do the same thing. I've become pretty good at estimating their weight, but it wouldn't hurt to know.

You need a mirror and don't groom yourself for a foreseeable time - might help intimidate Yourself more efficiently!

View attachment 466281The one I’ve put back on bout as good as the one I took off. But it’s not got holes. Why I don’t throw out a tire that holds air That job done for now
Good ole clamp on duals on that Deere..a couple 2x6s and a short chunk of pipe and they snap on good...... I have done it by myself for years.

Although I have planted a lot of clamps and they do not grow

No chit. I thought you worked at Van Der Geest Dairy then went a horse farm then back to Van Der Geest Dairy
I figured that was what you thought based on saying that. I never worked at VanDerGeest Dairy. That was just a consideration. I instead at that time got a job for Gold Medal Cattle/Trailers also owned by VanDerGeests. We do a little bit of everything. I was thinking about maybe working for Vandergeest Dairy next summer.

Most of my 10 head junior brood found new homes, the remaining 4 (2 pairs) are spoken for.
I will keep the 3 senior Runner ducks seen in this picture.
IMG_20250815_131737.jpg

The mini brood is growing steadily at an incredible rate.
As it was in the junior brood one duckling outgrew the smallest of its siblings twice in size - hybrid again.
Not wanting to reuse the name "Tank" I am thinking of "Dozer".
The mini brood consists of 2 pure bred Runner ducks, and 5 Wild momma duck & Runner duck daddy hybrids.

They all love crushed ripe apples.

Momma Mallard, pure bred Runners left & right of the pan, hybrid Dozer occupying the pan taking a bath.
Not an optical illusion, Dozer IS big.
Far left another hybrid, but not the smallest of the brood.

Damn!
Little ducky is not a happy camper after eating a bee or possibly even wasp.
Been sitting like this for quite a while, still breathes and can walk when spooked.
Had to happen, they chase after and eat anything flying low enough for them to catch.
I hope it recovers.
It won't take long to see the outcome as their metabolism is on steroids.
I just want it to run around again.

Edit (about 1 hour later):
Little ducky is OK.
It is alert, walks around, eats.

Nature is amazing!

Did some cutter bar repair today. Lots of fun hanging off a cheater on the end of that 36" breaker. Through shaft torques at over 700 ft-lbs.
