Took it in the shorts last week on a 430LB heifer at the local big stockyard. With work I can't stay and watch sales but this was ridiculous. They sold it for $.02 per pound. Yes 2 cents per pound. Tried to tell me it was a lunger and it was worthless. I told them if it was that sick it should not have sold and I would have turned it into hamburger. That resulted in another argument about how it was no good and me telling them since I raised it I knew exactly what was in it. Cost me over $21 to get $8.60 back and no animal. This is to start getting better looking, dark colored calves that I can sell direct from field or smaller markets. To many stories about how the guy who owns the stockyard has "private sales" early in the morning for him and his buddies and them resell things later in the day when the real buyers show up.

Doing crash course on cattle epds. Fun fun.

They don't let you set your no sale bottom end price at your livestock auction? Some places will charge a no sale fee but it's better than getting shanked. Gotta watch them places pretty close they are usually crooks. Your story sounds like there may have been some behind the scenes trading going on there. That's a bum deal though my friend.

It's a sad fact with all often with sale barns.

It's seems there's a brotherhood of guys (crooks) that control the prices of any given sale...

I've sold cattle just about anyway possible..... and anything in between. I've sold them from 1-86 head At a time. There's none of it easy in my book.

How do you guys sell or market your cattle?

As a general rule I usually try to private sell when possible. Either as freezer beef, straight to the processor or to a guy that is finishing. My view is if you run them through the sale barn you are wholesaling. That said I just came in from putting two on the trailer to the sale barn. This particular sale is under new management and is supposed to be attracting more buyers. We'll see.

I have only sold a few. Those went to people I know except one. My brother in law is the guy I count on to help me out. He has a guy that buys in lots, and pays top dollar. I'll be talking to him when I'm ready to sale.

Talked to someone else that ran stuff through the sale barn the same day and was told that the sale barn owner might have had himself some private sales before any other buyers were there. Its easy to manipulate prices when you own the place. Lesson learned. Sales supposedly start at 6am but most buyers aren't allowed in until 7. Thinking i may have to start showing up before work and check it out.
