Best way I know of is to heat up till non- magnetic and quench in some old motor oil (not synthetic) and let cool to the touch, let about an inch stick over a solid work bench or something, hit that one inch section with a hammer,if it snaps clean off it's good to be used, but if it bends it's not good for making knives.@Mkinslow I have boxes and boxes of old files...how to tell if thru hard? Break end off?
Thank you sir, I've come a long way in the last 5 years or so. I like making useful knives and most in the every day carry size, meaning in the 5-7 inch range. It sounds funny now, but our Junior High School shop teacher encouraged us to make knives from old files. I made one that came out 'OK'. Being color blind, it is hard for me to know when metal is heated up to a specific color for tempering or annealing.
But your knives are art, as well as appearing to be quite functional.

Terrific gift!
Terrific gift!
I was stuck by the irony of a belt holder for the POCKET knife lol. It is even labeled as a pocket knife on the package.
It even has a built in demo mode (turn table and starts and stops the chain without touching it)Yours for shipping!
