@Mkinslow I have boxes and boxes of old files...how to tell if thru hard? Break end off?
Best way I know of is to heat up till non- magnetic and quench in some old motor oil (not synthetic) and let cool to the touch, let about an inch stick over a solid work bench or something, hit that one inch section with a hammer,if it snaps clean off it's good to be used, but if it bends it's not good for making knives.

That test basically tells you it's not a case hardened material and will harden all the way through.

It sounds funny now, but our Junior High School shop teacher encouraged us to make knives from old files. I made one that came out 'OK'. Being color blind, it is hard for me to know when metal is heated up to a specific color for tempering or annealing.

But your knives are art, as well as appearing to be quite functional.

Thank you sir, I've come a long way in the last 5 years or so. I like making useful knives and most in the every day carry size, meaning in the 5-7 inch range.

Sharpening

* Update: offer has been ‘claimed’ by @livemusic *

I have stuff that is buried, that is hard to get to right now, so I am offering a service as a holiday gift:
- I will sharpen any chains that you can fit into a Small, USPS, Flat-Rate box, including: chain cleaning, gullets, and adjusting depth gauges.
- Includes return shipping in the US via same.
- Rocked and damaged chains are OK.
- Round ground, conventional chains only (no carbide, scratcher, exotic stuff.).
- Custom angles are OK (please specify).
- Recipient is patient, and understands that the 'holiday season' lasts through all of January.

Have two of these. I'm in the glock sucks camp but I'm sure there are plenty of you that aren't. Who wants one? I've got the postage covered.
