If it's in the face cut, like that one, it's a window to get the powerhead in there to tickle the holding wood. If it's in the back cut, it's for a jack.

Thats what I thought but wasn't sure. The only trees we have close to that size in Kansas is cotton wood trees and no ome is harvesting those.
