Whats the v notch for?

Probably to give the faller a hole for the powerhead so he can saw out the heartwood before doing his backcut. His bar doesn't look long enough to cut up all the wood on the backcut otherwise.

I figured it was for a hydraulic jack to fall it in the right direction.

If it's in the face cut, like that one, it's a window to get the powerhead in there to tickle the holding wood. If it's in the back cut, it's for a jack.
