I leave the swell on the bottom and let it grab all the dirt and rocks from skidding then I cut it off when I load the logs onto my mill. Usually I cut it to firewood length and then split it.That's nice straight timber. I hate butt swell, not because its a pain but that it holds dirt, rocks, metal someone sat next to the tree 20 years ago, mud from an A-hole skidder operator.
Bet he needed to change his shorts after that.This guy wasn't so happy today.
He was very blessed to live another day.
