The bark tightens up and they look a hell of alot nicer to sell. Dosent show every singe imperfection to the log buyer like it would if you skidded it rite away and tore all the bark off.
I don't get into a lot of walnut. Usually too far north for that. I cut 4 loads last year during spring/summer and I know what you mean. The bark slips and you can see every little pin mark. That and I think the sapwood picks up some color as it sits. I get a kick out of the chips that come off the fresh trees. Sometimes that dark rich brown, sometimes purple, occasionally green/blue.

Good walnut has an emerald greenish color. At least that's what they like around here. One mill we sold to sawed the lumber and steamed it so the heartwood color would bleed into the sap wood. That let them be able to pay just a little more to the logger, in return getting them more logs. You mentioned the saw dust, when you cut walnut down there's a layer of bark that's almost butterscotch/orangeish in color. That stuff burns the crap out of my skin. When you sweating and it lands on you itll leave a burn that gets walnut in color and leaves a water blister. You can see it on my arm. All those dark spots are walnut burn.

Yep I had the same thing. Took me a couple days to realize what it was. Thought I had gotten into some goofy stingweed or bugs or something.

Believe me, I'd like to hand cut more. But now a days if they tell me they have a tree for me to hand cut I knife it's a big one. They just pulled my skidder op off this job and I'll be off of it next week. The boss is putting a few guys on a 120K on 8 acres. It's some serious pumpkins. Yes, get a new hard hat. They are cheaper than any hospital visit.

We cleared for a few verizon cell towers. The head berizon dude had a *s-word fit when we had mac t's on. Made us change to plastic.......said its safter ?
I've heard that debate that plastic is tougher. I don't see how that could be. I've also heard it needs to be replaced more often due to uv damage.
