Based on what I’ve seen, a 261 CM is a win, hands down.

I've cut probably around 120 cords with 024/026 saws - they're just a great machine if they're in good repair.

I bought four 261s for my fire crew in 2014 and we had good luck with them. I've not handled the newer similar-sized Echos or Dolmars.

The Dolmar/Makita PS-540/DCS-540 is a great saw in that size class.

That's pretty much my own thinking, but I thought the discussion might be fun. All the replies so far have been interesting.

If it’s going to stay stock I don’t think you can beat the 261v2. The ones I have had are stronger than any of my stock 026s with far less vibes. However I love my ported 026, but it’s raw.

ive got 2 550xp a bunch of 026 and 1 261. 261 will stay..
550s are taking a kick to the nuts when i get them running well enough to sell...i would absotively avoid any 550 that is NOT a V3.

The new 550mkII is available still I think, you might have trouble finding a new MS261.

I should have been more clear that I'm thinking used. Sometimes part of what I'm thinking doesn't typed.

Although, I guess there's something to be said for buying a new saw and leaving it stock. I hear some people do that.
