So I bought this 661C from a buddy got it all cleaned up, dyed the plastics did a little muffler mod. I’m curious if these port well and if so if anyone could share some # and maybe pics of port shapes? Also curious what this saw is worth as is? 09390A7B-2869-4386-B9DB-063F73E79BF2.jpeg 19D93175-E4EC-4B08-943E-92BEEF9A7442.jpeg 547B1CF8-8B72-46C8-9F40-D7E4119D5F65.jpeg 3B875810-BCAB-440F-8CBE-DD68B2CBA9AC.jpeg

Around here that saw is around 700 minus the cost of new top and air filter covers to replace the dyed ones. Nobody round here wants modded stuff like that especially stihl stuff.

Delete the base gasket and verify you have plenty of squish. Open up the lower transfers, leave the uppers and the intake alone. (The intake timing is already at the maximum limit of what I’d want on this saw.)

Take three degrees off the roof of the exhaust to bring the powerband up, and add a bit of blowdown.

Here’s one built like this:

Scroll to the right through this post and it’ll show you my approach to a really ripping ‘woods port’ with nothing more than a dremel required:

The saw also has .020” off the flywheel key, and a triple-ported muffler.

Could it make even more power if the band was cut and the base machined? Sure. Of course. This is not a pro level build. But it’s hardly trivial increase in power, if you have patience and a dremel.

All those 661 logs and you video a punky 18” white elm with a 36” bar that most would cut with a 346. Stick that that thing into a log if you’re gonna talk about it like that

I have…me likes

Where are we talking about going? This first build I stuck to pretty conservative numbers. I’m highly, HIGHLY open to suggestions.

I’ll post a video of the above saw cutting a 4+ ft oak on a crane job soon. Crew estimates it’s a full 30-60 seconds faster on a large stem pick.

That said, I’m sure a 661 can be built much quicker than this one. It’s a conservetive port job for someone whose crew runs their saws with… very little maintenance.
