@timmad17 Didn’t mean lead you down the wrong path. I should have said advance it a whisper. Steve and Al have given sage advice on moderately advancing that timing (in stock form).

My advice was off as well.

Try to advance the timing and see if you like it. On the ones I’ve done, they haven’t liked it enough or it made things worse. I don’t make the effort anymore on this model.

Everyone’s recipes vary, we all are at different altitudes, and we all cut at different ambient temps at times.

Blanket statements about a saw model will always be met with skepticism, which is appropriate. There will always be exceptions.

Think about what ignition timing does. In no way am I trying to say my porting/recipe is superior, but the more one fills a chamber with charge and compresses it to be on the edge of a full burn, the less ignition advance one needs for maximum efficiency.

Multiple variables in play here. You should try it, you can always go back to stock.

I don't think your advice was off at all, it was your experience and that's exactly what you should share. With everyone trying different things it shows the potential of what could be and what it took to get it back proper again. Surely nothing wrong with that. Also this is the easiest mod we make to reverse.

Thanks for the information guys! I think at some point soon I will try to find a builder as it seems that porting this saw will provide the most benefit without me dicking the saw up to bad!

Porter is a personal choice.
My recommendation is mostly the same as these post but I use a 029-390 carb on un-ported saws. Has more low end imo with a long bar over twenty. I have never found but one that liked a timing advance and it was all jacked up.

Surprised no one mentioned the mesh air filter.

Have a complete revamp of everything before the intake port on one here. I think it will need a serious cylinder to keep up. Might try it out with a near stock jug in the fall just for testing to see if any gains are there.

Yes, on the mesh filter and a frogz skin let them breathe good along with healthy muffler mods on the other end to let the little screamer do it's thing.

Second video the saw sounds solid, first video the saw sounds too hyped up....you almost trip from the mountain of chips in the second video lol. Is that a big poplar?

That first one is pre-detonating like mad. That wouldn't last very long.

Interesting how all 361's sound nearly identical.
