I have a well used Stihl 066 Magnum. Its got the poly flywheel and had the C&P replaced with aftermarket units.
I have replaced all the hoses, seals and clutch/sprocket and it is very reliable and strong.
But..... its not been loved and the alloy case has pitting all over it, which isnt really a problem, but it holds all the crap and makes it hard to clean up after a days work.

Now I have been looking and there are plenty of low use MS660's for sale but I dont really see much advantage in changing over.

I am interested in the MS661 with its much better AV systems but the whole computer controlled thing has me nervous.
If I get one it will end up getting ported and I would love to hear peoples opinions on weather its worth upgrading.
How do the new computer controlled carbs respond to mods like porting and muffler mods?

Next question...... Will I get better performance from a new MS661 or from my old 066. I guess it depends on the timing config of these models.

At this stage, if I keep the 066, I plan to strip it for a full rebuild, port etc

I guess I am wondering if its worth putting the time and effort and cost into getting the old girl running hot or getting a new 661 to play with?

opinions?

I have both.
The 661 is smoother, uses less fuel, and as the bar gets longer, it dont really notice.

If your 066 is not ported, you'll love the 661, it takes a ported 066 to beat a stock 661

If I had to choose, I'd keep both and use them as a 2 saw plan

If you want your 066 to run at its potential, mdavlee or jmssaws build some mean 90cc monsters

stock 661R vs tri-port muff modded 660R

661 has a metric sh*t ton more torque than the 660. Which is why it does so much better on the 36" bar. Which would be good for the hard wood down under.

- tri-port muff mod 660R couldn't really do 8 pin sprocket 3/8ths even at 20". While 661 can almost do 8pin sprocket at 36". 20-32" = no problem.

- AV on the 661 is bad ass vs 660. My wrists and elbows give me problems when I ran the 660 to much. 661 no worries.

- I'd say you'd get about 20% more gas mileage with the 661.

- lot of mtronics have been ported. No issues.

- you can also run .404 chain on a 661 no problem. 660 even ported I don't think runs .404 as good. .404 will stay sharp longer and take more beating in that hard wood than 3/8ths.

Interesting! I wouldnt have thought a ported 661 would outdo a ported 660. I remember Randy had a fingered 660 that was alil quicker than a ported 661

Having ran a 066 compared to the 661 is light and day to me, the AV makes the saw more comfortable and less tiring. Both are great saws and a MM will make them even better. Never ran a ported saw so I can't comment on that.

That's not very scientific at all. Where's your control group...? Hypothesis?? Conclusive evidence???!!!! Has it proven repeatable?? You're a sham. Galileo will come out of his grave and dig up Kepler. Redbull660 you are an absolute discrace, a complete bogus and utterly fallacious boil upon the ass of true scientific procedure; and to science and its dedicated adherents. I bet you don't even have shoes.
