I got this 044 that I want to rebuild and use for firewood and play saw basically. I took the cylinder out and it burned up because of what I think was carbon build up and lean conditions. There’s some chips from the carbon at the bottom of the cylinder. The rest of the scoring is minimal. Nothing catches the nail. The chips are all below the exhaust port.
Would any of you reuse the cylinder or bite the bullet and find a new cylinder. I’ll definitely need a new piston. thanks.062BDF81-39C2-4063-9584-C20BB8474F76.jpeg 062BDF81-39C2-4063-9584-C20BB8474F76.jpeg 26FED270-5192-48ED-9088-9C25B0F872E7.jpeg 062BDF81-39C2-4063-9584-C20BB8474F76.jpeg 062BDF81-39C2-4063-9584-C20BB8474F76.jpeg 26FED270-5192-48ED-9088-9C25B0F872E7.jpeg F955B472-AAB5-4EF4-ACB6-924082EFAFD1.jpeg 2B98A228-0A8A-4307-9518-3B2DCC5965DD.jpeg

My gut tells me the same but I’ve never seen a cylinder with so many little chips. The chips do catch a finger nail but the scoring does not.

I have a 5200 poulan with the same type of pock marks, its a very strong runner but I think it was run with the frocking missing from the air filter for years.
I'd clean that cylinder up and run it. I used scotch bright pad material to clean mine up (044) and used a meteor piston kit.

I could see debris doing that same damage as stated @Maintenance Chief.
I read back somewhere that the meteor 10mm pistons could potentially hang a ring in the slant fin cylinders because the ring stops are close to a port in the sidewall? Is this something to worry about or has this been changed by meteor?

That’s only if you pair a later 12mm 044/440 cylinder with a 10mm piston. They widened the ports on the later cylinders to improve performance and as a result they widened the ring locating pins on the 12mm piston.

Those pock marks in the plating are defects from the process. Seen it on brand new jugs
Won't cause any issue no matter where they are from what I e seen

That jug looks like it will clean up just fine. I’ve had worse looking jugs look almost new again after sanding off the transfer.
I wouldn’t worry about those pit marks at all. They’re more common then you’d think.
This is a 10mm 044 jug I cleaned up. Virtual no marks after.01D29049-F7AB-4316-A98C-114A5FCC48D7.jpegC47E2997-9636-45D1-AE8B-C03D23B4890F.jpeg

That looks near minty for having skid marks up in there.

Thanks for the reply guys. I haven’t had a chance to look into it more. My boys wanted to go fishing today so we did that. Tomorrow I’ll see if it clean up but I think it will. The chips is what worried me. I’ve cleaned much worse transfer before.

Pot marks just hold oil. Just pic at the edge to make sure the plating is not flaking off.

Yeah we put a bunch of smallies in the boat. A few crappies too. Pretty much bass fished all day. My boys are 5.5 and 3 in 7 days. So I have my hands full. Wife is home with a newborn. Busy man I am. But boy we had fun for 6 hours on the mighty miss today.
I buy the boys a scoop of crappie minnows and dump them in the livewell and let them go to town for a few hours. Funny thing is today they were sick of the minnows after 30 minutes then it was helping the boys fish the rest of the time. Biggest was probably 2.5 lbs is all today. Rolled a 5 lber but had a freak breakage of rod. Snapped a st croix bass x 8” up from the handle.
So yeah it was a great day.

The meteor 10mm piston is an enigma. It’s a 12mm piston is all respects with the exception of the 10mm pin bore.

The ring pins are at exactly at the same positions as the 12mm 50mm 044/440 piston, so it won’t catch a ring on a 10 or 12mm jug port.

The issue is that the area between the pin bosses viewed from underneath is also the same as the 12mm piston. The 12mm rod small end it wider than the 10mm rod and when the meteor 10mm piston is used, there is excessive clearance between the bosses and the smaller 10mm rod end. It allows the pin bearing to shift out of the rod bore.

That being said, no one seems to have any real world issue running them. The issue is real but seems to make little difference or cause problems.

A nick in the rod more than likely. Tuna sticks explode every now and then I've been told. Seen the aftermath first hand.

That was a damn good day fishing and sure beats any day working!

Rod tends to ride on the crank more so than that piston with all the slop.

I'd just add, take your time cleaning up the transfer, the mastermind way. And don’t try rush it with bigger grit paper. As It will take the coating off.

I’ve tried to do it

And I’ve successfully done it taking my time using smaller grit :D
