I'd just add, take your time cleaning up the transfer, the mastermind way. And don’t try rush it with bigger grit paper. As It will take the coating off.

I’ve tried to do it

And I’ve successfully done it taking my time using smaller grit :D

I usually use 400 and 600 grit and hand sand everything.

Lot easier to make a mandrel and put it in a drill. Randy (Mastermind) did a video of it.

I think it cleaned up pretty good and with no worries of the pitting at the base. She’ll be a clean runner. thanks for all the advice my friends.

533BA997-7C4F-493D-A4EC-28A28B822A46.jpeg I’d use a q-tip with some muriatic acid here and see if she fizzes in this area.

Could just be stained plating, but acid with tell you the truth. Just put it in any alkaline bath afterwards and use PPE while doing so. Can resend and scotchbrite afterwards.

I use acid/sanding combo often. Even if you sand alone, the acid can help distinguish between off colored plating vs residual aluminum.

With the advent of Mag pistons, this is supposed to be a thing if the past. Mag won’t stick to Nikasil. A smoked slug will reveal a cylinder that’s looks new oem-this is what I have been told by reputable sources.

Funny you say that @drf256 after I went back out later in the evening I decided to do exactly that. It didn’t do hardly anything. So I think the sanding was sufficient.

I got the saw mostly together last night. I’m going to vac/pressure test it then run it for a bit with the new top end. If it all checks out, she’ll get a deep clean this winter. I have seals and bearings all ready to go but this saw has now mileage and bottom end looked spotless.
Excited to hear it run.

Depends on who you talk with!

The 12mm saws are supposed to be stronger, and some 10 mm saws did fail, but others look like they have been the He$$ and back, and still run strong.
.
IMO, the late 10mm 044s (just before they went to 12mm) were some of the most consistently strong running 70 cc saws, even though they were rated at less power. Some of the 12 mm 044s and 440s were just as strong, but IMO, not as consistently. Also, in stock form the 10 mm 044s had less restrictive mufflers, which I'm sure increased their performance.

Most 044s have slant fin (diagonal) fins on top, while most 440s have horizontal fins (straight across).

I don't think the early 044s were always as strong either ... but maybe it is just the ones I've had.

I purchased my favorite one new in Dec of 92, and it has a KS P+C. The later KS jugs have more + marks on them, denoting revisions that no one seems able to explain.

However, if you are looking to build a big bore, you need a 12 mm saw.

If you are going to port the cylinder, they are likely all just as good.

So what is the more desired saw the 10mm or 12mm and why

The 10's ran good, the 12's ain't really bad either but updated and tougher. For me the MS440 has the latest updates and the toughest and best lubed connecting rod, redesigned crank of the bunch and are the newest you'll find so possible to have the least amount of issues depending on run time, etc.. There was a late run of 440's after the 441 flop... Stay diligent, you'll find a nice example eventually.
Good luck.

They are very tough to find around here. I'll bet that red lever 044 runs strong (if it runs)!

Good eye, two are 044's, the other 5 are 440's.

Those were government saws, 5 out of the 7 ran when I mix sprayed in the carbs just messing with them, have not messed with the 6th one yet, the 7th one has a scored piston, the other 6 the pistons still look like new. I got 3 boxes of NOS parts with those saws also, 6 piston & cylinder kits, coils, flywheels, brake parts, impulse lines, fuel lines, carbs, trigger parts, bearings, seals, a crankshaft, filters, mufflers, and odds & ends for 044/440 like you would not believe. Plus I also got two huge boxes of used 044 parts. It was all sold in one lot.

Most times I find 044's they are beat to death or have scored pistons. These ones are actually pretty nice saws. I was told by the manager this place gets a new batch saws every 12-18 months, and the oldest ones get taken out of service and parked on the shelf.
