Stihl 036 rebuild

I did a search and didnt come up with a build thread for one of these, so I figured I would give it a shot!

My goal is to hopefully have it up and running by new years, but seeing as time and money will dictate most of that, we will see.
Now, bear with me. I'm a car guy, new to the saw world and learning as I go.
This is the first time I have even picked up an 036.

Heres the victim. I got it from my local dealer, straight gassed. Clutch drum is missing, otherwise, it all appears to be there.

Now, I highly doubt I am going in the order the Stihl manual suggests, but whatever.

Air filter out of the way.


Pulled to cylinder cover. Can see there has been contact between the coil and flywheel.


Wanting to see just how bad it is, I filp it to the pto side and pulled off the dust cover.


Removed the clutch.
What exactly does the arm on the oil pump drive contact to drive it? The back of the clutch?


Next I removed the brake spring with my automotive drum brake tool. Then removed the E clip from the stud on the linkage and pulled out the brake band and link.


I also removed the oil feed line from the case.

Ed, I’ve got a cylinder here that was cleaned up of some transfer if you need it, I got a package headed your way soon anyways.

Next, I forgot to drain the bar oil...
And removed the 2 bolts retaining the pump to the case. Then, plugging the hole in the case with a finger, proceeded to drain the bar oil...

Due to well lubricated fingers at that point, I didnt get a picture..

Next, pulled out the oil seal. Yup, that bearings not going to work!


So, now, I decided to pull the muffler.
Its not a recommended procedure, but it looks like straight gassing really removes the carbon buildup.


Im not sure why, but I decided to take a closeup of the coil. Perhaps I thought that in a Rum induced stupor I would forget which wire goes where?


So, then its off with the flywheel and pull the seal with my custom L shaped screwdriver ground down to fit.


Flip the saw upright, remove the choke linkage, and fuel line. Unbolt carb and find out the carb wont pull straight off without further disassembly of the handle.


And thats where Im stopping for the night.

I have been following Al's thread!
Seeing this is my first 036, I thought a build thread would help me, and I wont clutter his up with stupid questions, like what drives the oil pump??!!

Lots of guys my way still run lots of 36s not sure a more durable saw was ever built by Stihl, great saws.

Your Oiler line is not melted and deformed. That’s a good start right there!

Where was that Zama made? I can’t make out the stamping?

I have to say I was surprised by the lack of goo buildup behind the starter cover and around the flywheel.
Every other saw I take apart I'm not sure if I will find part of a mastodon fossil or part of Jimmy Hoffa buried in the muck.

2 different styles of clutch drums. Small and large. One takes an 044 bearing, one a smaller 034 bearing.

The oil pump tang gets driven by a notch in the clutch drum. The 044 drum actually will fit, but it’s too shallow to engage the pump tang. If you have the larger drum, make sure it engages the tang.

Looks like saw was run super lean. The bearings failed and took out the seals. Then it scored.

Al, how do I tell, when the time comes which drum I will need for this?
You builds are more along the Ferrari line, I expect mine to be more akin to an East German Trabant.

Between deer hunting, my kids birthdays and other life stuff, I had a few minutes to spare.
Removed the screw from underneath and pulled off the top of the rear handle.

Token pic just so I recall how it goes together once I get that far.


Now, 1 chinese Zama off.


Removed the av buffer plugs, screws and disconnected 1 rock hard impulse line.
Tank and case separated.


Token picture after this small spring from the part of the brake I left on the case fell out, just so I know where it goes!

Up next, off with the jug.


Am I missing something, or shouldnt this this be in alot worse shape if it was straight gassed?
Some scratches on the piston. Thats getting replaced anyhow.
Then I tried the "heat and beat" method of splitting the case. I got it to separate about 1/8".
I may revisit trying more later, or just hit the Stihl shop next week and ask him to split it.
Or just make/buy one..

The fw bearing allowed the fw to contact the coil preventing the saw from running long enough to score the cylinder. The misdiagnosis is common, regardless of what's wrong with the saw. Because of it, they probably sold him a new saw.
