Stihl 028 Wood Boss “Budget” build.

I think thoses metal tank 028's called for a gasket under the carb for some reason, don't know if really needed. Is that a 44mm? It looks a bit newer than the 42mm. Looks like a nice saw. Them are tough saws.

IIRC The 42mm has the arrow on piston pointing towards the intake and german word for intake stamped next to the arrow.

I am not sure what the bore is. I should have checked it the last time I had it apart. What year did Stihl bump the 028 up to 44mm?

Found the year. And I guess the ones earlier than ‘78 are points models if I am not completely mistaken. This one has a coil.

Dont know the year. Your cover has electronic quickstop on it, but the hand guard is the solid type just just pivots on a spring, no chain brake. They were many versions of brake and clutch types. The non brake ones could be converted to a brake with a kit. No wire coming from under the flywheel on your?
See the cover on Wood Doctors pics, that is a early one with points and no brake. Who knows whats been swapped around over 40.years these saws have been around.

I don't see a wire going under the flywheel and it has a chain break. But like you said, this saw was probably swapped around a few owners and maybe one guy converted this over to accept a chain break, who knows.

I promise to let you all know when that 028 I showed in post #19 dies. However, if it outlives me, I may not be around to let you know. Believe me, that saw could do exactly that. They don't build them like that anymore.

I agree. Even with the old 2 series Huskies they are and were almost impossible to kill. But you really cannot go wrong with a good Stihl though.
