Got it all torn down and the piston and cylinder were in pretty good shape. Little tiny bit of carbon smear on the exhaust side of the piston but other than that, I’ll run it.6FC24E57-C6F9-443D-9483-EA8D946E6C0C.jpeg 79DB4D6F-57BF-4CE9-8343-065DFDAC2759.jpeg E1BC3E7E-5A9C-4E4C-8E00-66744BCB3879.jpeg 0F3607DF-E2FD-4FBE-BA14-BC3EAD71D782.jpeg C0AE33F8-B72C-4E7A-8DF1-B154658F7694.jpeg

Don’t have pictures of the base gasket or the intake boot but the base gasket looked like it sealed up well, the intake boot wasn’t deformed and there were no tears on the book that I could see.

Cool project Austin. Looks like you should have a good runner for under or right around $100. Those 028 saws were tough mfers. Not real fast but they sure work hard and will take a beating.
Honestly a saw that age and with an unknown history I’d be doing crank seals just to be safe, check that fuel line real close and if it’s stiff at all or has any cracking replace it. Carb kit is obvious from your pics and it likely wouldn’t hurt to give it a new fuel filter. Those old air filter were notorious for the flocking coming off and just leaving behind the course wire mesh. Give that filter a good look over as well.
Wish I lived closer. I’d come over and hang with you and your pops and heckle the crap outta ya. Lol

According to the IPL the cylinder gasket for these is 1/2 mm (.020). So if you were at .039 it may be possible to use a thinner material and make your own gasket thus reducing the squish.
It looked like the piston is domed, so I'm not sure if you'd have enough to do a base gasket delete. Others could chime in more familiar with this model. The 028 was a standard here among the old farmers. I've seen quite a few and they really do hold up pretty well for what they are.

Rebuilding the classic 028 W00d Boss was one of my favorite projects:

A good friend bought it and uses it all the time. He actually preferred not having the chain brake. He has had no problems at all, and I sharpen his chains every year.

Update: I still have this saw in the barn but it was sold off to muh Pas' friend. The last time I went into that carb, I remember the metering lever was BARLEY touching the diaphragm and almost wasn't picking up the needle. So I bent the metering lever up to the carb body and put it back together. Ill ask my dad to see if I could get it running right. As of right now all it needs is a new fuel line and fuel filter.
