i got trees that pull sediment out of the creek bottom so it does a number on chains really no chain is ideal except for carbide but that stuff is to slow for me.

It lasts longer than round chisel for me.
I grind a lot of chains for neighbors for $5 a piece.. One fella pays me $10 a piece to put square corners on with a file cause he likes em so much..
If you leave more metal to support the working corner, he says they last just as long as anything else he runs.. Says he gets 3 truck loads on a new Stihl RS or a square filed one.
He cuts firewood as a second income.
Bout 100 cord a year. I always ask for his feedback. I like square for work too. I find it just as easy to make sharp as round.. And it feeds so nice and smooth.

My round was done that way Chris in the chain build off. I got to aggressive though on the angle.

Stated in the thread too. ;)

I run some square filed chains, my buddy Walt does them on his Silvey for me. I keep them going as long as I can with a hand file after that, maybe 5 times, then back for a touch up on the grinder.
Other than that most all of my other chains are square chisel with round file jobs on them. Nevada has wind and sand in spades, it gets blown up into the bark and sure is hard on chains.

Mike, what do you use to remove the step below the squared area? I did some with a round grinder and some with a dremel and a disc stone.

I run mostly RS and LGX. I have a couple loops of CL. I periodically will put the CL on just for fun. I've really got to keep practicing my square filing. I'm getting better but I still have a long way to go. I have a loop of 23rs I tried converting for my ms260. Turned out ok but really chatters if I don't dawg the saw in. With the 260 dawned in it cuts wicked fast. I think I have the DG a little to low

I do round been thinking of a venture over to the Squarewitchery (dark side). The Squaredude was trying to but his force was not strong enough. He did give me some leads that I need to follow up on.
Were you in the garage at Custer's when I was throwin ideas around? I'm just starting to have some fun with it.

Fastest 325 RS I ever seen was done by a friend on a swingarm to square. Was like 50% faster then the rm semi I replaced on the saw. Plus gains 23% on the muffler mod. So 73% faster from just a muffler mod and change of chain. = amazing the difference.
New owner left with a big grin. :D
