Spinning and breaking 1/2 pitch chain

I'm in the process of buying some 1/2 pitch chipper chain on fleabay and what do I need to break and spin it? It is coming with a few presets and ties. Can it be done with a .404 spinner?

I’d probably use a punch and ball peen hammer. That’s how I break my chain and spin it. Even .325. The heavier chassis of the 1/2 would be easier to deal with. .404 is easier than 3/8 for example Plus the rivits are larger so it leaves more meat to flatten a new Rivit without needing presets.

Oregon sells their standard duty spinner and Breaker, and their heavy duty ('DuraMax') set which also works with 3/4" pitch harvester chain. Some older hand held saws also used these larger pitch chains.



I doubt that it would be worthwhile buying this heavy duty set for 1 or 2 loops.

Breaking the chain with a lighter duty breaker could damage the tool: I would grind the river bead off first. Spinning could also be difficult, but the rivets can be peened over.

Or, find someone with the HD tools.

I'm going to get together with @SOS Ridgerider soon and we're going to get the 2 rivets spun and peened over if needed.

Got together with @SOS Ridgerider today and his Harbor Freight spinner breaker worked perfectly for the 1/2 pitch rivets. A little bit of touch up with a 1/4" file and some adjustments to the carburetor had it running and cutting well. Slow and loud but gets the job done!
