I've seen alot of posts about the screen preventing things from getting in the muffler, but I thought the original design was for fire prevention?

Yes those are terrible but I think the screen is not the problem, it is the 1/2” X 1/4” reduction in the hole!!!

Correct. Both are the problem. I even tried blowing compressed air through one that was clogged and nothing went through it. Some Stihl line trimmers also have major spark screen clogging problems.
