I don't know how big your motor is, but I've purchased several inverters that will convert single phase to three phase, I have them on my lathe, mill/drill, and surface grinder. I only have single phase in the shop and the variable speed operation of the lathe and mill/drill is sure nice. The surface grinder came with a purpose built three phase motor so the only option there was the inverter.

I agree op would be better off with a inverter. Probably cost effective too. Would be worth checking out.

My old lathe is set up similarly on a VFD. This new lathe has a two stage motor and a lot of controls wired for 3 phase, including an electric foot brake. I can’t say I’m very knowledgeable about these things but it seems simplest just to set up a Rotary Converter rather than rewire the controls.

I left work early to grab parts for the element in the back. Somehow this headliner folded in half twice and took an hour of downpours. It was $20 and I need it for a pattern to cut mine but I think it’s going in. Mine is a base model with the roof console. Got the overhead console, headliner, sun visors. seat parts and didn’t get struck by lightning IMG_2752.jpeg

I’m close to the highlighted interchange. It’s $7.16 to go to Carlisle which is about 40 miles on the turnpike in a car. It’s the most expensive toll road in the world. Fifteen or twenty years ago when tolls were cheaper and there was less traffic it paid to use it. For me to go to West Chester it’s $6.49 each way for a 100 mile trip. I used to pay less than $2 each way. I hate it but I run it in my company truck. Going west isn’t bad but east is a disaster after the first twenty miles. If you don’t have ez pass it’s significantly more.
Illinois has toll roads up around Chicago. In May 2005 I had to go to a 3 day state school board conference in the heart of downtown Chicago. I went in on interstate 80 which is free. One of the nights I went out to a suburb to pick up a 2 man Mall saw. What a clusterfudge of traffic but still no tolls. After the conference was over I was going to head east and then up into Wisconsin to get more saws. I got my fill of toll roads at that point. It seemed like every damn 5 miles I had to stop and pay a kings ransom.

A few years later I bought a load of saws north of Chicago. I planned the trip to run 2 lane roads and avoid the tolls. Well that was a mistake as they were bumper to bumper due to constant construction.

Lesson is stay the hell away from Chicago

The lathe runs a 5hp dual stage motor. My understanding is I need a rotary converter with at least a 7.5hp motor but 10 or higher would be best.
I have a 10hp one here and a smaller one that is 1.5 or 2hp. The smaller one was on an auction south of Waterloo IA. It was running a Bridgeport mill in a guys barn. I intended on buying the mill but the owners son selling out was a real horses hind end. The mill has been placed in the barn years ago and they later poured a new floor in the adjoining area. That made the doorway to short to get the mill out. Before they sold the machine shop equipment I asked the son if he had a skid loader to assist in getting it out. It would still need to be taken apart but a skid loader would help. He refused and he paid the price. The mill was in good shape but since he was such a pain in the arse it sold for $900. I bought the rotary converter that was powering it for $150 or so. I used it to run a 20 inch Powermatic band saw. The 10hp one was bought to run a large planer but I ended up tapping into an existing 3 phase line running through the shop.

Good deal right now at Fleet Farm. $6.99 per gallon or $7.37 out the door here after tax for me. I do not have the farm tax exemption.
That’s where I got it. Mama Bear picked it up and forgot to give them the farm card so I gotta go back in with the receipt. I had some hoses and other stuff as well so it’ll be worth my time.

Farm and Fleet is one of the worst at honoring the farm tax exemption so there is no way they will honor it on oil.

I’ve only ever shopped at a Blaine’s Farm & Fleet once in Madison, WI. I wasn’t impressed. They’re said to be family of the original owners of Fleet Farm and got into a disagreement over something. Similar to the Albrecht’s of Aldi.
