Runout is what matters, I don't think the way the grain faces is a concern. I've heard the topic beaten to death every which way and I've yet to see proof one way or the other.

Runout is good on it. So if that's what matters, I should be good.

I know I've always heard grain orientation matters, but I'm no expert. I just run the things and never much paid attention to what I ran, except for the past few years. All I know is, I'm gona run it and we'll see what happens. It was cheap enough, if it doesn't last, it's not the end of the world.

Going back to Boy Scout days, I recall the issue of grain orientation. Runout matters with respect to the handle breaking or splitting. But wood is also stiffer in one orientation and more flexible in the other. Probably more of an issue with striking tools (maul, axe, sledge hammer) than a pickaroon type tool. But even with nail hammers.

What both of you say, makes perfect sense to me.

When I first heard and thought about grain orientation, I related it to a 2x4. They are stronger standing on their edge, than the side, or bigger flat part. That's why it makes sense to me that handles would be stronger with vertical orientation, or at the least stiffer and the more horizontal would be less strong and more flexible. Makes sense since there's a lot of frce when hitting wood, if a person puts down their purse that is.

But runout............I can see grain orientation not mattering much, if not at all if runout is at a 45, for an exaggerated example. Grain orientation can't do what it does if it's not the full length if the handle.

Mind you, I'm new to wooden axes and mauls. I mostly use a Fiskars maul and X27 axe and my other maul heads and sledge heads, I run Nupla E series handles. So I am still learning about what makes a good wood axe, or maul handle. I'd never really thought much about runout till Woodslasher mentioned it.

Got the mmws 395xp in today. This thing is wild! First ported saw in my hands and I’m mind blown by this thing. I’ll get to put a bar on it tomorrow when the adapter plate comes in and play with it

Picked this up today. It should go nicely with the Tree Monkey 6400/7910 with heat and the MMWS Solo 665/7910 that I have. Putting a Tsumura 28" light and a Oregon semi skip square chain from Mike Gott (MG2186) on it for the weekend gtg in Minnesota.

I'd never really thought much about runout till Woodslasher mentioned it.
The first time I really thought about it was when the head of one of my double bit axes went flying away after I hit a log at too steep an angle. Seeing 4lbs of sharp steel go aimlessly flying really makes you consider the ways to avoid repeating that.

The tinkerer in me still smiles ever since I received this little though heavy box filed with 12.9 grade bolts in the late AM. :D

Now the addiction starts lol
I have my 500i out getting ported now and a cs2511t. I think I have a problem lol. Been nothing but climbing trees and chainsaws this last month. Need to step back before I don’t have money for everyone else at Christmas
