Dolmar 421 enough said! Honestly the best small saw I have run. It's lightish, good power, carb holds a tune great, good av and filtration. Set it up with 3/8 lp and go to work! Oh and get rid of the cat and retune

I have zero Dolmar dealers around here that keep anything in stock. Are these clamshells? I dont have any IPL's for Dolmar.

I looked on their website and it looks like they are about a pound heavier. I know after adding a bar, chain, oil and gas it'll be closer to 13-14#...

I love Echo, for buying a new saw I would prefer buying Echo over anything else. But from what I see everything Echo has to offer in the small CC range is a clamshell.

To heavy. I had one and I am afraid its a little to much for him.
Real world figure ...Ps 420 (your 421) power head with 15" .050 bar and chain out of the box . They drop to just over 12 lb on a 14" Lo pro bar and chain.

Fill it with fuel and oil. I have some additional weights, but they're with fuel and oil, ready to cut.

The point of me posting the "real world weight " was to show what the powerhead and bar in standard form was . You can fill the tanks to whatever you want ..full ..1/2 full .... but other than a bar and chain swap thats the start point of the saw. I also take into account the lightening load when using the saw as it uses its oil/fuel .

I simply asked so that we could compare weights of some additional saws.
Back in a bit. I will put up a weight of a saw with a 14" sugi bar and lo pro chain up as iv one set in that form and then il change it to the standard bar that comes in the box.

Would I be crazy for suggesting battery powered? 5.29 lbs before battery and cutting equipment for the husqvarna version.
I would say your not out of line. And there was a section like this a while back. Not sure what be came of it.

What about a CS-450P?

Cs-450P is a great saw but really needs to go on a diet. For pretty much the same weight and size you can get a 490/500/501. Having had both the 450 and 500, you definitely get more performance out of the latter.

If the OP is willing to consider a clamshell, the Echo CS-400 is a solid choice and doesn't weigh much. You can buy a really nice used one on Fleabay for under $200.00. I have used mine pretty hard and it keeps coming back for more. Never had a problem with the clamshell construction either, don't use your saw as a prybar or drop it out of a tree and you'll be ok. The MS241, 543, 421, 024 etc. are not exactly lightweight once you add bar, chain, fuel, and oil.

With the intended owner in mind and the fact an 036 is to much saw/weight, I think a super light pro saw is in order. My pick would be a Mtronic MS201 rear handle with 14"/16" Light bar running 3/8 050 Picco Super. That saw will be super light and very capable cutting <14" wood on his trails. I have one, expensive...yes but if he needs a really light non clam shell pro saw, its very hard to beat. I can use mine for hours & its so easy to use.
I happen to have a rear handle kit for a 200t...just growing that out there. And I am close to the OP.
