Elm burns like compressed cardboard IMO. I was not a big fan of it when I burn it, didn't get a lot of heat for the volume of wood and lots of ash. Idk, if it was all I had I'd burn it but it was crappy. About on the same page as soft maple from my experience.
Wasn't red elm then, it was piss elm. Huge difference

Red elm is harder than oak

That's what I thought Deeter. The Elm I cut was rock hard.

The only chance with Piss Elm is to ring the tree a year before you want to cut it, then fell it and let it lose its water and shrink. Then buck an split it and it burns ok. Otherwise, I second the vote on Styrofoam. Stinks too, though not as bad as Cottonwood.

The tops always seemed better than the trunk to me. Anyone else experience that?

The tops of our standing dead Elm(American & Red) are usually hard like bowling pins and very good burning, the trunk can have a considerable amount of moisture and be very stringy when splitting.

My 1944 Monarch model 219b. I need to get new firebrick for it does anyone kjow where I can get any? It's not like any firebrick that you get at the brick yard or woodstove place. All the brick is ribbed and tapered with radius on them. It is capable of burning coal but the guy said not until I get new brick, but it's safe enough for wood.

If you look inside the bricks in the back are starting to go and you can also see how it described the radius and the grooves on the bricks.

Picture just as I was getting it set into place before I hooked up the flue.

It may be your only option. Most of the companies that made those sort of things got sued into bankruptcy. Asbestos was often used or mixed in the products, just the nature of the beast.

Yeah that's why I figured that I can't find them anywhere. Being the age of the stove I am sure that there is asbestos involved! At least one web site that I found I can find virtually every part to totally rebuild and or repair this stove minus the firebrick!

I went out for drinks last night with the wife for her birthday and found this stove at the local establishment. I've seen it many times but finally got pics in operation. I WANT ONE!

It's sitting on a raised hearth 12-16" tall but you can see it's still a massive stove. The girl to the side in the one pic cant be much taller than 5'9 at the most.

Funny part is I asked the bar tender if they knew where the stove came from, she told me it was custom made. One guy at the bar said "ask a mason". To which i quickly replied, "a mason didn't build that steel box"! Then promply walked away to avoid further ignorant comments lol.
