A while back over on RFC, someone did a poll of the worst .22 ammo ever.
Rem Thunderbolts took the title for worst American made .22lr ammo.

It's unfortunate that domestic ammo makers can't/won't manufacture good quality .22lr ammo.
CCI is the best we have and it ain't great.

I've had really good luck with the Winchester Super X rounds in the 100 count packs. Power Points and Super Speeds have very consistent velocity and accuracy and shoot clean in my guns. The basic Federal Champions and Lightnings do really good too, at least in non-autoloaders.

My low cost ammo of choice is Fed Auto Match. It's reliable in auto loaders and provides acceptable accuracy.
I've had good results with CCI Mini Mags as well but they're a bit more expensive.

Have to give credit where credit is due here. My Ruger American .22 is very accurate with Thunderjams. Was shooting it today and they turn in noticeably tighter groups than Winchesters. Will be interested to see how Aguila Super Extra compares, given that they shoot great in every other gun I have and cost the same.

How well do you like that 22 for the money? I have 3, and none fit me well. The 10/2 could be setup with a different stock, but it'll go to my Daughter. I'm looking at buying an adult-sized 22, and that looks good for the money. I may still buy a Savage, but I don't know anyone with an American Rimfire.

Have you looked at the CZ's?

I would be leery of buying huge quantities of new ammo right now. Manufacturers can and do cut corners to get product out the door. They know there is serious money to be made right now, and you can't expect all of them to maintain their usual standards (which may not be all that great to begin with). Besides the hard primers I mentioned earlier, right now I am using up a brick of Thunderbolt .22's that I remember I bought during one of the many panics of the last decade. The rounds in this particular brick are marginal in rifles, and downright unreliable in handguns. As in, when fired from a handgun about 1 in 10 rounds has a very soft report and keyholes the target.
I quit buying thunderbolts a long time ago 2"+ @ 25yds in a rifle is unreasonable. Not to mention the HEAVY lead deposits it left in 2 10/22 barrels I had about 10 years ago

I love mine, it looks and feels like a centerfire in the hands. Almost everything on it other than the stock is steel, and it has an adjustable trigger. Even compared to the nicer Savages it feels more grown up, and miles ahead of the Marlins and cheaper imports.

Cheap rimfire ammo is still available in my area but centerfire pistol ammo is in short supply. I only buy the most accurate rimfire ammo my rimfire likes and it's usually not the cheap stuff. I don't mind paying for quality. And I'm glad I handload.

I prefer using subsonic HP's squirrel hunting. They're quite and have plenty killing power longer ranges. The first subsonics I used were Remington but every 3rd or 4th shot there'd be a flyer. So I'd shoot green tag match ammo to see if it was me or the ammo. It was the ammo. The only subsonic HP's brands I've shot that were consistent and very accurate in my rifle were Eley and RWS. I'm using a 581 action on a match Broughton barrel. I bought several bricks of Eley.

I guess I'm lucky as all my rifles shoot Thunderduds great. Pistols, fuhgeddaboutit. My side job shop has been getting Federal Gold Medal HV in regularly and it shoots really well in all my guns. It's $3.50/50 with my discount so I pick up a couple of packs after each shift.

The thunderbolts are about 75% out of my 10/22, and about the same out of my 69A... Now the Winchester gallery gun eats almost everything, but the exposed hammer and heavy spring make for a resounding impact...

The Ruger MKIV varies.
