It would be interesting to see what the second saw would have done with a little less transfer timing or what saw one would do with 3° more ex’s timing or one right in the middle
I've tried 2° difference and couldn't tell the difference. So I went 3 this time. 2nd one feels and sounds better until I dog in

Speed is nice, but too excessive chainspeed and the chain just skips over the top of hardwoods making dust instead of biting in and taking chips. Put the same chain on a 394 and a 562 and look at the size of the chips the saw makes... 394 destroys a 562 with pretty much any bar despite holding 2k less rpm in cut. Torque. Displacement. I think a good balance like PA dan said is good to shoot for.

2nd one is nearly new. 2 tanks maybe. 1st one has maybe 10 tanks.

2nd one is turning maybe 200 more rpm in the cut. But when you dog in, if it drops 1000 rpm, the 1st would drop 600 rpm.

What do you think, Jay? @Grjfer

Don't ask me, you are the sausage king. :)

I don't think I would ever care about a couple hundred rpms, but I do like I more torque. I'm open to whatever you want to do to it.

Or lowering the intake to give the saw with the lower exhaust more fuel at higher RPMs … the possibilities are endless, and even a pro porter can do 2 saws exactly the same and have them run differently, it is part of what makes this stuff so challenging!

I remember reading once that blueprinting a car engine could sometimes add as much as 100 hp. I guess if everything just lines up perfectly you have a stronger running saw, and if you break it down and re assemble it, it may not remain as perfect (or, may be better).

So many factors … does one style of muffler mod prefer certain port timing??? I've had 2 instances where I ran more restrictive mufflers on saws. A 440 Big Bore ran just as strong with the open muffler, but sucked fuel like crazy, it ran just as strong will less muffler opening and stopped sucking fuel. An Asian 660 lost a significant amount of torque when I fully removed the baffle, so I just drilled a 1/2" hole in the baffle and it ran great.

Have you tried playing with muffler openings on them? One may prefer something different than the other.
A little.
I didn't touch the OEM port. It has the slide in screen, so it's tough to open it much and still be screened. I added a 2nd deflector to the recoil side with about a 3/8 × 1.25 hole

It's ported a little bit higher strung. But the other one seems to have flatter torque. I guess I'm not sure which way to go with it

Need to start the sausage series of saws, with different names for each. "Would you like the braunschweiger or the double smoked Kielbasa?"
