Why? Cut some wood. That's what they are for!

I made one cut today. It throws chips a long way. Its headed down to my dads for some real world cutting. I'll have him review it :)

It cuts just fine, I have no problem with its power...the doc does nice work. But the only way to see what really is up is to put it on the dyno ....

Or hook up with eric and Marcello and compare.
But really you know if it strong just running it. You've built this saw before...

I started testing ignition advance earlier today to see what makes the fastest cut times, gonna do stock 010 020 030
I got stock and 030 done,I'll get the other 2 in the morning. I already had a 030 key in the saw is why I got it and stock.
I got those 2 videos loading.
Cutting a 20" white oak log.
044, 046? 066? Vid won't load. Storm came through and musta took out the nearest tower

Jason,

Do you thing the timing advance may result in different cut speeds with a longer bar?

Interesting, and once again, mind boggling results. Thanks for taking the time to test this out.

I used your numbers Dan. Should run a lot like Marcelos. Now he just needs an 87.

If you remember, my ported 261/2 was considerably slower with the 144 carb than the 87. I still believe that the 87 is unnecessary in any stock 262, but it's needed in a ported one.

144 carb was mostly used on 261, far as I can see on IPL's it wasnt used on 262 or 254, maybe it worked better on 261 due muffler and less compression compared to 262, or maybe the 144 doesnt flow as much fuel as one 120 and 87 can do?

144/120 have the same bore as far as I can tell.

At least on my 261 ported conversion, the addition of the 87 ran circles around the 144. I've ordered the throttle plates to do the conversion, but I've been waiting 2 months for them at this point.

It's @rjames saw now and he's pretty happy with it. If/when I get those plates, he's getting the first conversion.

Longer bar may change things but I think the saw sounds better with no advance vs 030.

I don't know, the saw I'm using is around 200 or 210 I'm guessing I've never checked it. I think it will vary from saw to saw, flywheels and coils will vary from saw to saw.
Yes different ones act differently ,same mods do not work on all of them for sure ,on the finger ported hybrid ,about 1/3 of the key is gone ,it has good response ,snappier than the one with the stock key and mild ported jug ,but i am sure the jug has more to do with that than the timing .

Anybody else ever put serious thought into why almost every 066 and 660 cylinder is timed different? No way they changed them intentionally that often.
I can't recall ever seeing 2 alike, lots close but not the same. It's not possible to change castings that much.

My guess would be that there's a lot of moulds used in the manufacturing process. Each one is just a shade different but still in spec. So out the door they go. I'd bet that Stihl never gave it a thought that someone would actually be checking the timing on them.

I've seen intakes from 76 to 82 transfers from 117 to 125 and exhaust from 94 to 98
And I've heard of some at 99

The performance of these saws even ported is dependent on how good the cylinder is timed stock. The older cylinders are definitely better as a whole, makes it impossible to make a new saw run like a old one,the smaller cases of the older saws help but it's mainly the cylinders.
I don't know of any other saw that varies like these, maybe that's why I like them.
