Show and tell day .This is a precision hone ,Lisle model CHJ small cylinder hone . This was given to me so I don't have dime in it and really have only used it once .That was to finish a cast iron liner in a Mac 125 I did years ago .View attachment 275714

I have one of those....only bigger. That's the smallest version I've seen.

If I'm not mistaken the range is 1 3/4" to 2 5/8" .There are a couple on flea bay right now .They aren't cheap . I've got the stones for both cast iron/steel and plating .As I've said though I really can't see using it on plating .Good old Scotch-brite and kerosene with a little elbow grease or the arbor deal with a battery drill ,good enough .

I've got regular shoe hones and brake cylinder hones but it's been decades since I've rebuilt an automotive sized engine or needed to refurbish a brake cylinder .I do have a sick old Ford that lives in my woods I should rebuild .It had over 100 thousand miles on it when I bought it and 263 thou as it sits .Toughest in line 6 engine ever built ,Ford 300 .

Years ago on the plains of Kansas and eastern Colorado they used both 300's and Ford 460 V8's on the deep water pumps for irrigation .You could see the glow of the exhaust manifolds from 2 miles away on interstate 70 .The 300's were made in Cleveland the 460's in Lima which BTW I have my name on the last 3 ever built . I could overload the server with tales about the 460 but that's for another time .

263k on a 300? Heck, that's just getting broken in! The 2.5 4 banger in my Ranger is a Lima product and has the same good DNA. I think the Pinto 2.0/2.3/2.5 were the best American four cylinders ever made. Thousands of them are also still in use on compressors, wood chippers, gensets, and other industrial applications like their bigger counterparts.

The 2.3 and later 2.5 I could write a book on too . My '97 regular cab Ranger might be the last of the 2.3 which I think is the 8 plug version .It's just turned over 100 thou .Has a rebuild title, front clip .It's been a good one for a little baby truck .When the last 600 blocks went through machining areas my buddy and I were the electricians .That machinery was so worn out we had to reset the machines every block .Good thing it was the last of them because it could not have handled another 100 .

My stupid arse forgot to take a picture before cleaning. -I'm sure you can imagine just by looking at the piston. I was certain that plating was gone.

This was just a 2 minute first attempt.

I was surprised when I found a Ford 2.3L in a Bobcat.

A story about the old '77 ford F-250 that lives in my woods .It had sat for a long time and the engine was hung .I used the grease gun trick and broke it loose then rolled it over with the starter and blew oil all over myself .I looked like a rough neck on a drilling crew .Put the plugs back in and drove it out of the woods .It was blowing white smoke like a steam engine and my wife (RIP ) came out of the house screaming --- the truck is on fire :aplastao:

Lots of good info and techniques for accomplishing a hone/deglazing on a cylinder. I love having more tricks in the back pocket for a pinch.

When I was a kid my best friends dad showed me a trick he learned from an old Mennonite gentleman back when he was a kid. 40-50 years before.

Take a piece of steel oxy acetylene wire and bend an inch or two back on itself, I found I generally had to clamp the bend in the vice to make it tight. Cut it off to the length you need and put some sandpaper in the bent end. The bent portion acts as a clamp for the abrasive.

Cloth backed paper worked best I found, chuck that up in the drill and run it up and down in the cylinder. I freshened up a lot of small engines with that method some of which are still running -20 years later. I don’t use it much anymore, but for that odd sized cylinder that just needs a little love it works well.

It kind of acts like a flapper disc of sorts. It might work well on these nicasil saw engines.

Bent wire is a good ‘trick’.

I have a few, commercially made mandrels, that I use with ‘emery’ cloth, for some things. I recall guys also cutting slots in nails or steel rod, with Dremel type discs, for the same purpose.
