So i had this chinese 52cc cylinder and it was mirror glazed, been thinking for a while how could i hone this one.. Flex hone is too agressive on ports and side channels, 3 stone hole wouldnt work because of side channels (probably). And i didnt really want to spend money on it
So i tried with this configuration hehe, seems to work

*NOTE* This cylinder is unusable and only for experiments, i know i need 45° pattern but this was first attempt

Well, it was kind of inspired by your method, but i dont have air grinder and my small cordless drill is limited to 700rpm, so no enough ripms for centrifugal (yeye inertia..) so i just slips on cylinder walls, thats why i used sponge to have light constant pressure.

Great idea. You should see small Echo cylinders, they are near mirror finish, with very very small hone marks. Without close inspection you'd think they didn't hone them.

Hm, actually i never heard of scotchbrite ball hones, here where i live, when i even ask for scotchbrite they are like "what the hell is this guy talking about... you have sandpaper...",
4$ ball hone and 25$ shipping :/ yeah not worth it :')

ScotchBrite is a 3M brand. Generically a 'non-woven abrasive pad'. Often sold for scrubbing dishes, buffing floors, etc. Sometimes sold for autobody refinishing as an alternative to sandpaper.
Dremel / Bosch also sell some mounted on the ends of small shafts for use in rotary tools. Search eBay for 'Scotchbrite Dremel' to see lots of options.

I chuck a screwdriver in the drill, fold red scotchbrite sheet in half and wrap it around the handle. Works great.
I used wooden dowel, split it and used tape to under wrap scotch brite, chucked in drill , did great 125 psi on build , broke it in and haven't checked it again

I'm not so certain if you actually need a 45 degree honed finish on a plated cylinder like is preferred on cast iron . To just "clean up" a cylinder Scothbrite with kerosene works well .With a plated cylinder you really can't remove ovality or taper like you can on an iron cylinder .
From my perspective on a plated cylinder is after enough run time the rings will seat in even with some slight degree of ovality and taper which would be so small any way to even get an accurate measurement of it.
For that matter I have a Lisle precision hone with the stones for both iron and plated but I've only used it once when I sleeved an iron cylinder for a Mac 125 .It was given to me ,pricey .

To hone or not too hone has as many opinions as mix oil brands and ratios there of .Some do some don't and have the same results .
I've only flap wheeled one cylinder and ruined it in the process by not paying attention and using a 40 grit wheel where it should have been a finer grit .Every since it's been Scotch-Brite and elbow grease on plated cylinders .I say what ever works for who-ever .

Ive used ball hones on a couple cylinders. While they make a very nice job imo on port edges and deglazing they are a bit too aggresive.
They sure break in the rings super fast but then they also start out very far from broken in. I think masterminds way is much safer.

As I've said many times you can not hone a cylinder to remove ovality and taper unless it is a precision hone of which I have one, a Lisle .On that the plating is so thin on a plated cylinder there really isn't much you can do to improve it .New rings will wear in and after some run time you won't be able to know it from a brand new cylinder ..

Looks good to me.

I made some videos on my method a few years ago.

I'd say that scores of cylinders have been salvaged and back to use since this information came out.
I remember back in the AS days there was a big debate about "to hone or not to hone." Turns out many
were already doing it with great success in getting saws going again. Thanks for the reminder.
