OK gents just a word to say please be careful what ever you are doing. The reason I am saying this is because I was sharping a tool bit for my band cutter holding with my vice grips the dang thing poped out and bounced off my glasses now if I had not had them on I would be hurting right now I have no dought. So take time to be carful Please. Mike

Dear Sirs: I am sorry to trouble you but I have a safety question and do not know where to post it on the forums. The question is as follows: The head of a typical wood-splitting mall has a large chisel or wedge side for splitting logs and the reverse side is blunt shaped; similar to the face of a sledge hammer. Is it dangerous to use the blunt face "hammer" side of a wood-splitting mall as a sledge hammer to strike the head of a wood splitting wedge? Thank you - Watt

I have used my maul to drive steel wedges many times. I would think this is why they are designed this way.

It's safe. But if you are driving steel wedges and ESPECIALLY if it's cold wear safety glasses.
Very very true.

It's only dangerous if made in China. ;)

It's best to just always wear glasses when pounding on anything. It only takes a second to put them on. I had a co-worker catch a fragment of metal in the arm from a drill bit we were loosening with a sledge years ago. It made me rethink things like that.

I agree^^. A few years ago, I had a piece of metal find its way into my eye. I even had safety glasses on.

Regardless, having the opthomologist grind out the rust from my eye with an overglorified dremel was one of the most nerve racking ordeals I have sat through.

Right before he did it he said "now dont move". Are you kidding me?

He put drops im my eye to stop the blinking reflex Mike. But it was terrible when I heard the tool spin and saw him laying it in there.

Like a high priced foredom coming at you.☹️
Dang I guess I would flip out to. He told my cousin he had a slow blink reaction.

Safety glasses don't always work . I had a thorn get kicked of a dozer track get past a pair once. Straight to the optometrist to get it out and three days down to heal.

Very true. I've had lots of stuff get past them myself. Every little bit helps though. How many of us have found rocks/pebbles in our pants or shirt pockets after weed whacking all day?
