Went to the dump to drop a load of construction debris. On the way in out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of orange in the scrap area. Whipped around, complete metal tag stihl 044, well used but not abused. Picked it up and a guy in a loader came around the corner and saw me standing there with it. Just said, you cant take anything out. Confirmed with the desk lady and left it there. What a bummer :(

This was a county landfill that’s pretty buttoned up. The guy in the loader worked smashing down trash in a series of dump bins where people without a dump rig unloaded their crap. He was still in the loader 20 minutes later in the general vicinity and the saw was still sitting there. He may own it at the end of the day, but he wasn’t in a hurry to go grab it. The lady at the weigh desk told me they don’t want any liability so they don’t let people take stuff.

Our local dump has the same rule. Once it goes in it doesn't come out.

Some rules were ment to be bent or all out broken. Married guys know this as. It's easier to beg for forgiveness than ask permission.

Now I abide by the rules, except under certain circumstances. This would have been one where that would have gone in the truck in a blink of the eye. Sorry if you feel that is wrong. But completely discarded "junk" is fair game in my book.

Im sure they have cameras and that'd probably score you a felony depending on how high the law man wanted to value the stolen property whether its junk or not

it’s amazing we keep hearing recycle what we can, and yet it cost them money to dispose it..

Very eco and environment friendly thinking, do not allow anyone to repurpose something that others threw away.
Or even if You do, charge "as new" prices for it.

I bet one could make quite a buck scrounging scrap metal and saving individual items from a dump like that.
And it would certainly be friendly to the environment.

I am not a Stihl guy, regardless I would still have lost a tear over having to leave a complete looking discarded chainsaw on a dump. :(

The modern human world is out of whack!

I dropped some stuff off at the local 'tip' (what we call the 'dump' in Australia). I saw a few old lawn mowers and picked out an old Victa lawnmower (no problem about picking through the trash, if I couldn't salvage it, then back it would go). I went through the mower and it had a loose intake manifold that allowed it to score the cylinder and not run.

After $100 and a bit of work, the bloody thing is a top performing lawnmower, best mower I've ever owned. Yeah, we need to re-cycle so something like that should be encouraged.

Well, I actually didn’t know there even was a rule as I didn’t see a sign. The saw was 20ft from being in my truck when the loader guy saw me. I asked him one time to clarify that I can’t take anything and he confirmed. Since he wasn’t going anywhere I wasn’t going to try to sneak it out. If I would have known the rule I would have timed it’s escape better. At least it was in a section heading to the scrap yard and I’m sure it won’t end up smashed.

I've dug a fortune out of trash piles .Almost 20 years of working as a construction electrician and 29 at Ford motor .The stuff people throw away is just amazing .I've got tool boxes filled to the brim with lathe tooling at least a 1000 high quality drill bits and things like that .My best is a Greenlee model 785 pipe bender that will bend 6" sced 80 pipe .The plant manager signed that scrap pass which I keep in my safe .One is for sale right now on flea bay,$22,500 .
A couple Hilti hammer drills that just needed some work .One is a TE 80 that had a ruined armature but attending an auction later I bought damaged TE 72 which is the same drill for $12 .That one uses SDS max drills, the big ones .
I lost track of how many chainsaws mostly found by others .Some I still have some I've given away .

Betcha he got it. Shudda just drove around a few seconds.

The City was taking down some big pecan trees for a parking lot. I stopped and asked if I could cut some and take it after hours or on the weekend. Told me no. He said you can call my boss but he will tell you the same thing. Then he told me both he and his boss would be taking as much as they wanted, with a big smile on his face, and the rest would go to the dump.

I live in a small town and scrounging is a way of life
I proudly tell people that at least 75% of my house is recycled or repurposed or diverted.
My stainless flat top range came from the dump almost brand new a few cookie crumbs in the oven,$75 part from eBay and its been fine for 6 years. All my flooring and trim was cut from old bridge timbers. The logs are local and the government puts no value on building logs,it's all firewood around here.
