Rotella 15w 40 oil in a B&S?

What do you think of Rotella T oil in a 12.5HP Briggs vertical shaft engine? Someone changed the oil to that, should I leave it?

Might be harder to start if the weather drops below freezing, otherwise should be just fine.

I use 5w 40 in my splitter engine and it works just fine. If the temp dips below freezing you might want to pull the engine over slowly before pull starting. It might help with the longevity of the pull rope.

splash lube engine or pressure lube? it'll be alright for warmer temps. normally run 10w30/40 & 5w30 for cold temps.

I have used 15W-40 and 5W-40 diesel oils in my 12.5 hp Simplicity splash b&s engine for years. Mostly used in the summer. The mower is over 30 years old now.

I thought they were supposed to take non detergent oil. I plan on storing it in the garage and can preheat the engine with a diesel heater.

Everything on the farm from the push mowers to combines and minivans and skid loaders get 15w-40 all year long. Never had an issue we traced back to oil. It’s much easier just having one big tank of oil to pull from.

I’d say run it.

Keeping oil topped off and changed regularly is way more important than anything else. I use store brand synthetic 10w30 in everything except the diesel tractor.

That particular 15–40 is very good at cleaning up carbon left behind from not changing other oils often enough. I have seen Honda 1000 and 2000 W generators burn oil and shut down before they ran out of gas. Changed to Rotella t 15w-40 and the problem went away instantly. Oil was black after 10 hours run time. The detergents in it are amazing

It meets all the specs...
the honda atv has a automatic and specifies non friction mod oils.
as the engine and trans share the oil. Rubicon atv 2001
6500 miles,, no issues.
Mower is 35 or more years old.

I use the bulk 15w-40 Chevron Delo we stock at work in my tractor and wouldn't be afraid to run it in my small equipment if I felt the need for 40wt. oil. I don't own a German sports car, but if I did you can bet your ass I'd be running exactly what the manufacturer specified, especially in a DFI engine.

I'm a big fan of Delo full synthetic 15w-40 in all my off road 4 strokes, gas and diesel. If they made it in lower viscosity I would use it in my car and truck.

Pretty sure they offer it (XSP) in 5w-40 and 5w-30. I know for a fact they make the semi-synthetic (XLE) in 10w-30.

In the early '80s' we had a 3/4 ton 2wd Chevy come into the shop doing that hard to start from excess oil usage and smoke. For some reason we put 20/50 Valvoline "RACING" oil in it. Beat ourselves out of an overhaul job. We tried tat oil trick on ford and Mopar but no luck. started selling a lot of Valvoline for some reason. This truck and other successful brand changes were the 350 small block not that 5.9 DSL. The 292 were bullet proof so never tried it on them.
