If that was diesel, you should NEVER use starting fluid on one. lucky they didn't blow the heads off of it.

Used a lot of ether on the older Detroit's, Cummins and Cats. I think the ones with glow plugs are the ones that will pop the heads. The old Astro we drove had a little thing on the intake stack from the factory you put a gel cap with ether in it and shut it and it would release into the stack for starting in the cold.
