get the bar hot and turn the oil pump all the way down and run a partially dull chain and in no time the paint will fall off the bar.

Jake can't hear what the hell your saying the chicks in your avatar are way to loud:cbiggrin2:

Going by the FLIR image the chain is approximately the same temp as the plastic inserts and the bar is significantly cooler, correct?

yeah the inserts throw things off - they read hot but you can hold on to them all day long

it's not a perfect science but nothing is. You can tell if the bar is running hotter or cooler. When you can hold onto the bar with bare hand after a long cut then you kinda know it worked heh

30°-40° is enough to take this test seriously. I would not have guessed the clear made that much of a difference. I have bars that the clear has worn off and have not noticed anything different, but I was not looking either.

I'm starting to wonder if paint is affecting the reading on the laser thermometer versus a clean metal surface to reflect against.

I don't think so, I use lasers at work for reading distance. They will read off of most any surface
