Still picking a load and then I will Chrony and hope for a low SD. But that is the type of accuracy I am looking for. Id love to get a 80gr or higher bullet to work. Anyone have an opinion about Hornady vs Win/Rem brass? Not many options for 6mm Rem.

Consistency being key to accuracy I would give the edge to Hornady. That said a great load can be made from Remington or Winchester brass after it's been shot once, and resized and trimmed to specs and primer pocket reamed. Then (and only then) weighed. Culling out the extreme heavy and extremely light examples from your lot. Being as it is fairly affordable in comparison to most others extra can be purchased to get the necessary number of rounds desired. Once you start weighing and separating you will see a bell shaped curve so to say with the majority in the middle, this is what you want to keep. Helps greatly in limiting that "flyer" that you wonder just where it came from. It's a bit of work, but it does pay off in the end.

I bought my son a tang safety Ruger M77 in .243.
It has a 1:9 twist barrel. It shoots 100gr bullets fine but doesn't like anything heavier.

Hmm, I wonder if it is one of those that had a marginal barrel?

Norma or Lapua does not make brass for 6mm. I think Ill order 100 pieces of Hornady.
Tried some 100gr Sierra this wknd. Not good results. Tried some 58gr Vmax. Shot well but not the objective for a 600 yd gun. Id like to find a 75 or 80 gr bullet to produce nice groups.
Do you know what the twist rate is? IIRC, my Ruger 77 MKII Sporter .243 has a a 1-10 twist barrel. It may be 1-9, but I don't think so. Either way, 100gr bullets will stabilize, but not great. I think the nest I've done so far was using either Hornady or Nosler bullets and it was roughly 1.25-1.5" @ 100. With 65-90 grn pills, it's usually a 0.70-1" rifle. I have found that my rifle isn't particularly fond of boat-tail bullets, which rules out many of the higher BC bullets. I don't know if I'm not driving them hard enough or too' hard. More experimentation will be required.

Have the barrel swapped for a fast twist & let it eat!

If/When I shoot it out, it will get a new barrel. I just haven't decided if it'll be another .243 with a faster twist or a .257, 6.5mm-284, 7-08, .308 or a .338 Federal. All have pluses and minuses and I've had nothing but good results with the .243, but the itch to change or have a caliber with a bit more flexibility is always there. I also have a VZ-24 that needs re-barreled, or re-bored. I just haven't decided what it'll be yet, though I'm leaning towards either a 8mm-06, .338-06, .35 Whelen or a 9.3x62mm. We'll see.

when Rem. came out with the 244 (1/14)advertised as varmint unit- course Win 243 was advertised a little differently that is where the twist rate problem was , 244 discontinued and shortly there after 6mm appeared. with a 1/10 twist ( same as Win 243). but the damage had already been done by all the talking heads regardless of the nomenclature. By that time the win 243 was firmly entrenched. There is apx 100 fps advantage of the 6mm over the 243 a little more with a blown out case . a OEM 6mm rem marked barrel will shoot the whole line of 244 bullets sweet spot 70-90gr taken deer out to 300yds with the 100gr pill, that was many years back. First buck I ever got was with my Rem 788 in 6mm and 100 gr pill circa 1976. back then it was buck only or if a party of 4 then a doe tag could be gotten-just one tag though. 40 years later those bucks are even better at hiding than they were back then. Unless it is before or after shooting hours or out of season. :(

I went with Win brass and that wasn't easy to find. Agreed on Lapua, but they do not make 6mm brass. I also got 2 new boxes of bullets. Sierra 75 gr Blitz and Hornady 87 gr (VMax) I think, might be HPBT. Gun went on the back burner with fall winter projects. I will dig it back out with cold dark Sat and Sun eves coming up.
Hoping to get some snowmobiling in this winter. Just getting back into that again. If anyone wants to talk snowmobiles I can start up a thread. I just got a 2015 GSX Ski Doo and a 2017 Renegade Enduro, both 900 ACE.

There was a very informative article on the 77 in Rifle magazine awhile back, I think the author was John Barsness. He noted that Ruger used a few different barrel suppliers for the 77 back in the day and some were subpar.
Thank you.
I'll have to see if I can find the article.

As I remember it was from 2005 or so. I have most of the issues from that time period packed away somehwere.

I looked online last night. There's a lot of information.
Thanks again!

I do all my reloading supply shopping at Williams gun sight I have to go get the stuff but I like to do walk arounds in the used gun dept. Have gotten some good deals doing so.

https://williamsgunsight.com

Cases like 308, 243, 7mm08 that I use can usually be found at the clubs range clean up bins.
If you use 30-06, 2506 and some others it can befound there also. 90% is once fired from auto loaders. Bolt guys tend to either be handloaders or pitch the cases in to the pails.

Been using Williams sights for decades now. Just put a WGOS with large aperture on an NEF muzzleloader in fact.
