That is exactly right. Birch is also the #1 firewood species in Norway where more firewood is burned per capita than just about anyplace else. Can you imagine this stack?

Looks cool, but my luck a top piece would slide off and hit someone. Burning it would be like playing Jenga, but with a little danger and risk added.

That tree was old and huge. No doubt it needed to be climbed. Not many species have more heat content than hickory. The weight of those rounds can perhaps be described best by one common adjective: heavy.

My hat is off to the climber and to you. I will never forget the shagbark hickory trees that I cut for firewood in Connecticut. It was like mining for gold.

It is heavy for sure. I tell you what, it’s wet making it heavier. The only good thing about the moisture is I think it makes it easier to split (I could be wrong).
So far it’s been relatively easy, not straight grain red oak easy splitting, but much easier than I anticipated.
I took a hickory down during the winter two years back. It was a smaller tree but so much harder to split. Not nearly as moist as this monster.

Waiting for me at a neighbor's backyard. They left a little by the curb so grabbed that last night before it disappeared.
