Try lightening up on the file, and rotate the file so you're pushing more towards the front of the saw instead of across the bar. That should stop the file from grabbing the depth gauge and chattering, making filing much easier with far less effort.
Round off the point that gets created at the front of the depth gauge to allow the depth gauge to smoothly ride across wood fibers instead of digging in. File the point perpendicular to the bar with very light pressure: the point is small and quickly rounded using a twist of the wrist.
