I totally get the desire for less dB. Not long after I started in the printing industry 27 years ago, my employer started requiring us to wear hearing protection. I took to these style plugs pretty quickly after trying out many.

They are a very soft foam. Comfortable in the ear because when they expand, they don't push very hard. Which is why most of us found a bunch of different brands gave us headaches w/ discomfort. They can roll up very small making them easier to insert. After you do put them in, sometimes you'll find they went in to far and you can pull them out a very small amount at a time to get it right. Now, just about everything I do with loud machines, I wear them. My son must as well. Hearing is something you can't get back so I respect it.

Loud saws look faster than they are by the way.

Most people will swear that a loud saw went through wood faster, even if it didn't.
It's all about the sound man. lol Same with my homelite....really doesn't cut any faster, but you know I'm running a saw from miles away. lol

When running my Altec "Whisper Chipper", I wear both foam ear plugs and over the ear muffs. (and it's still too loud)
I've found for comfortable muffs, the Western Safety ones from Harbor Freight are inexpensive, effective and have low compression pressure as well so they're comfortable (relatively)
I've worn David Clarks for years in airplanes so am used to having a vice on my head and it doesn't bother me.

Lots of guys blow their ears out with muff mods and even pipes because they think they are cutting faster. I've seen saws with pipes at GTG's get blown way by stock saws and no muff mods.

Hey, I just had a thought. JR recently mounted up a thing and called it a torque pipe. Maybe you could get a scooter sized muffler and get someone to mount it up.

I wear some 3m muffs at work and they have worked pretty good for me. And is it possible to pack a muffler like you can one a dirt bike ?

Now I don't have the tools to try something like this but I have wondered if you change the baffling upnif it could help with sound. And these little doodles are from looking at it from the top down1485692027354.jpg

Sound cancellation is key, and I think it's targeting the upper frequencies. While flowmaster has a great idea they do rob power and has been proven on a dyno. I'm thinking more of a straight through design with a perforated tube and packing. Like a flowmaster muffler or how the stinger mufflers are built for mx bikes.
