Outstanding afternoon for a bowl. I’m enjoying some Sunbear black locust in my MM cobbit shire pipe. I really like the combination of extra long stem with the Virginia tobacco in this blend. This pipe has me eyeing a cobbit sapphire elf pipe.IMG_5022.jpegIMG_5021.jpeg

I’ve also been almost exclusively favoring strike anywhere matches for lighting and relighting my pipes lately. Was able to source some from my local mom and pop ace hardware.

Yeah, those sapphire stem pipes in the Cobbit collection are tempting me as well. I have the 3 that have the white, grey, or silverish, and black swirl stems, like what you're smoking now, but that blue looks awesome.

Are you on Pipes Magazine forum?

I saw a thread where someone was asking about what lighter people use, and was blown away at how many people use matches to light their pipes. Well over half the replies were matches, instead of lighters.

Y'all must be onto something. I'll have to give it a go.

I’m not active on there. Usually just lurk when I’m looking for an answer to something or a pipe review.

I think the matches are a much softer flame for lighting a pipe. I bought a bunch of those little pocket size strike anywhere matches and a bigger kitchen match size box of them as well. It seems like most ace hardwares are supposed to be carrying them.

I have a question for folks. How many smoke a pipe or cigar inside the house?
Pipe, yes. Cigars, no.

I find by the time I smoke a cigar, it looks like a Grateful Dead concert inside and I can smell it for days, even though I don't smoke a cigar that often.

Pipes, I don't have the issue and don't notice it. I may take a couple puffs on my pipe and then sit it down for an hour. It's just not constant smoke bellowing, like with a cigar. Plus, I think certain pipe tobacco's smell way better than cigars.

That said, I do smoke outside a good bit as well.

I have never been to a Grateful Dead concert but I have been to a AC/DC one and let me tell you the smoke in there is a bit different. :D

Years ago my wife and son went to a Def Leopard concert about 3 hours away. I said be prepared to be deaf and stoned. I think she was because after the concert she emailed me some pics from their hotel that were "very proactive":D

I smoke 99% of the time outside. My Grandfather rarely smoked cigars but smoked a pipe from the minute he rose before dawn and until he turned in at night. He smoked everywhere he was including the house. The last 7 years he was pretty much bedridden but he kept the pipe going. He was born in 1898 and passed in 1988 before society had changed attitudes. My father also smoked a pipe from the time he rose til he turned in for bed. He started working in the early 1950's when you could smoke a pipe all day at work. I worked with him near the end. He was in management and folks would joke.....I smell "Jeno" (his nickname) coming. He always had a aromatic blend that could be smelled from a good distance. My brother and I were destined to smoke. My brother went straight to cigarettes but I went to cigars and a pipe.

I do not regret it a bit. There is nothing better than a soothing pipe blend or cigar.

Been a bit since this thread has had a bump. I'm smoking some Sutliff 507S Stoved Virginia, in my first Country Gentleman pipe. It started cracking pretty quick, but I just kept smoking it just to see how long it would last, and it's still going. Not bad for a 17 dollar cob.

I hope everyone is still enjoying their pipes!

Yeah, it's a good benefit, for sure. Cheap, and surprisingly durable at the same time.

I put some cigar ash pipe mud on it a couple times, but it would chip away pretty quick. If this was a 100 dollar briar (not saying they would crack like this), I would be a bit disappointed, but it's not worth worrying about with cobs.

This reminds me, I need to ask my mom if she still has any of my grandpa's pipes and lighters. If so I'm going to add them to a tribute shelf for him. The shelf for my other grandpa has some of his shotgun shells and coonhound trophies on it.

I wish I had my grandpa's old pipes and ashtray. I don't recall what lighter he used, but he had briar pipes, and a pretty snazzy glass/porcelain/ceramic whatever ashtray.

Off topic, and not directed at you, Ferguson, but it drives me nuts when I misspell a word, it gets underlined, and I finally have to look it up to see how to spell it, after I take about 4, or 5 shots at correcting it. Porcelain was the word I had to look up. Good grief.

Just happened to be smoking a Country Gentleman with my all-day tobacco when I opened this thread.

Of those that I have most have been smoked multiple times daily for the last 3-5 years without any cracking. luck of the draw.🤔

I did recently misplace one and was going to order another one $17 believe my last ones were around $12:eek:

Whats funny is, both of my grandparents quit smoking in the early 1980's and being true children of the Great Depression just repurposed their many ashtrays into coasters, flower pot bases, and paper clip trays. I keep my keys, wallet, and pocket knife in one of the larger ashtrays on my dresser in fact!
