Permatex Gasket Maker #51813

The instructions say to spray one side with Permatex Surface Prep activator and apply the sealant to the unprimed surface... Will it be OK if I don't use the activator?

Yep, just make sure everything is clean and dry.

I clean with brake clean, then smear a nice coating on one side. Torque down and wait 6hr minimum. 24 for full cure.

I didn't have brake kleen so I used starting fluid... Just spread a thin coat of gasket maker on the case with muh finger. Squish was right at 0.025.

I agree it will be ok. It just sets up much faster with the surface prep.

It won't be fired for a few more days. I'd like to do a press/vac test to make sure everything is sealed. I'll need to make something to block the ports.
