I am needing a large bar to finish bucking a large 78" tree trunk. I deal with a supplier that deals with Oregon products and I can get a 42" Powermatch for $82.00. The chain is where we are running into problems. They can find it for 3/8 pitch, .063 gauge, but I was going to switch to .404 pitch for a bar this big. Should I stick with 3/8 pitch? Oregon shows 122 drive links for .404 but we can't find a part number for the loops.

I am new to the Oregon chain deciphering so any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Hooskie 395. This is a once in a blue moon need, but I had a beech tree fall and it is blocking a road. Dozer won't touch it where it is. Would skip do better than full comp? I may stick with 3/8 pitch.

395 will pull either for sure. Personally I would fight less and cut slower....Im "old" :(
by "fighting" I mean....if that's what they gots ( .404 or .375) well then get on to it.
I would "choose" the .404 because it might be a better "stump" chain setup sometime in the future. we get some big reds and ashes that could use a 42" from time to time.
dont' think you would "need" a skip for a 395 with either.

be carefull with them big sumova"beeches" :)

I haven't got to run it a lot yet. I have played with it in some small stuff, but I haven't had the chance to really test it. I like the filter set up and the fact you can tune it compared to a 661. The 395 is mine and we have a 661 at work. It will be interesting to compare the two this winter.

If you switch to .404 you'll have to change the bar tip from 3/8 to .404.
That's what I thought but I was contemplating buying a bar in .404. I have decide to stick with 3/8 just to reduce cost. They had the numbers for those. Evidently not many people run .404 around here.

I'd go with full skip with either 3/8 or .404. Full comp won't be any faster or last any longer and it has that many more teeth to sharpen when it's time.
shawn, walk me through this.
around here we never see skip.
other then "sharpening less" is there an advantage to less teeth when it comes to cutting/bucking ?

Yes, more clearance for chips. Often on long bars skip is faster because it has more room between cutters to evacuate the chips so more cutters are actually in contact with the wood and not held back by the chips from the previous cutter.

Run skip in which ever size is readily available to you. Less teeth to file, and the saw might spin a little faster inadvertently keeping the saw cooler while pulling that big Ole bar!

I wanna see that big tree to mister! Big trees fascinate me.
