Years back a guy at work did something similar attempting to weld a cracked steel oil pan on an engine.
He hosed the area down with brake clean, wiped it off and when he hit the trigger on the mig, it shot a 3' flame out the drain plug hole .

lol you guys would think im crazy if youd see some of the *s-word ive done
cutting a axle out from under a older chevy truck and first thing i did was set torch right on the gas tank
changed quite a few fuel pumps while smoking
welded on a 4 wheeler gas tank
cut open a tractor gas tank to get the rust out of it

just got to be ready for it
