Yes Cats could be fast. I had a '98 ZR600 EFI that received the piston/cylinder update.
When in for that service they found that one of the mounting tabs for the EFI module was cracked/broken. There were none in stock of the 3 common ones, so Anoka Ramsey pulled some stings and got one from AC's works/racing group.
With a couple of changes to the header pipe to exhaust connection (shortened by 3/4") the power curve was raised about 300RPM. A bit of clutching and what a difference, and the fuel usage dropped a lot, went from 11-12 mpg to over 15.
Still have a 2001 ZR800 carb that gone through 300 miles ago. What a beast for a older school design. It still make me grin.
