Yes Cats could be fast. I had a '98 ZR600 EFI that received the piston/cylinder update.
When in for that service they found that one of the mounting tabs for the EFI module was cracked/broken. There were none in stock of the 3 common ones, so Anoka Ramsey pulled some stings and got one from AC's works/racing group.
With a couple of changes to the header pipe to exhaust connection (shortened by 3/4") the power curve was raised about 300RPM. A bit of clutching and what a difference, and the fuel usage dropped a lot, went from 11-12 mpg to over 15.

Still have a 2001 ZR800 carb that gone through 300 miles ago. What a beast for a older school design. It still make me grin.

I knew a guy with a ZRT800. Thing was dumb in a straight line but any sort of curve you'd have been better off with a Fleet Farm shopping cart on 3 casters.
It didn't help that he knew nothing about suspension adjustments either, so I'm sure it could have been improved.

A good part of what made those work (and both of my ZR's) good was to get them to squat more the harder you pushed them, they became nearly glued to the trail. At least IME.
8" or 10" of turning carbide and a "sno-pro" track pattern completed my setups.

Years later there was quite a bit of talk how Morgan's crew chief was real good at exploiting gray areas and loopholes in the rules.
After I sold my last sled I really quit paying attention to most of it. Looking around now, it looks like they all hired the same design team and even painted them the same colors now.

Yeah, the good old days of snowmobiling have passed. Now it’s a $18,000 hunk of plastic that doesn’t block the wind. But I do have to say that the suspensions have come a LONG ways since 20 years ago - a 250 miles day is a breeze now.

6” of carbide on the ski’s and 120 studs is what I ran on my 440. I like just a little bit of ski slide in the corners without too much “grab”.

My 440 eventually got swapped out for a 680 Black Magic big bore. Now THAT was a fun sled. The light 440 chassis with 140 hp..

Zrt 600 slightly modded. Yellow lake Wisconsin down the channel. I am not on the sled but I was watching my friends do dumb sh!t this day. I miss the days they would let this happen. Was always a good time watching people skip the channel.

The triples always sounded badass, but I never wanted one due to the weight.

First thing all my friends did when they got sleds was raise the suspension up as high as they could, thinking they would get more travel - not me, I setup my sled for my weight and riding style, and let it set down a bit when I was on it. And they would all get pissed when my little 440 was way ahead of them That was always fun!

Today's workout is done. Looks very similar to the others but I possibly had a little more power, and higher intensity, without reaching a higher bpm. Painful yes, but I wasn't at the threshold.


Now I'm going to have a cup of coffee, eat, continue cleaning (found a refurbished hda 199 under some papers lol), a round of washing of the 560 before I pop the top end.

I never liked them. I did work at 2 different Polaris dealerships when I was younger that solidified my opinion - recalls were standard procedure and they have main chassis points that are glued with epoxy where they would have been welded - it probably holds up for 75% of the weekend warrior riders, but for anyone that rides aggressively, it’s a disaster waiting to happen. They also had a LOT of trouble with crank bearing failures on multiple engine platforms.

Now, back in the 90’s - those wedge chassis sleds were tough. Their engines too. A Fuji 440 would regularly go 10,000 miles untouched.
