I've been talking with Tim some lately about his Ford 400 pistons. He is working on some high quality flat tappets for Ford engines now. I'm going to be swapping the Windsor engine in my 83 F350 for a built 400....
Keep me posted, the 4x4 chassis I supplied for my brother's highboy swap has a 400 on it.
One thing I would like to know, now that we're on the subject out of curiosity's sake. When I used to look at the engine detail decals on the valve cover, it always said 351M-400. How were you supposed to tell which one it was? To be honest Back then I didn't really care, it still went to Ed's zip line place.
The interwebs says "Just to the right of the distributor will be a rib in the block casting if it's a 400, nothing if it's a 351."

Not certain what is in them, no diesels anymore for package cars. Last one I spent several years in was an 8.1 gasser.

Not too far.

Yep. Last diesel ones that came in management was told to put them on routes that would have a longer run in at the end of the day due to the DPF on them. So of course they stuck them in town so it would clog and cause problems. Then the mechanics had to run a manual DPF cycle and waste fuel and time, not to mention the number of break downs just because they needed that regen run.
Not sure if it’s true or not but the ups man up here said his had a ford 300 straight six in it. Yes this was years ago but that’s what he said back then obviously they have different ones now but he said the 300 was the engine of choice for many years. Supposedly only make turns one way to save fuel also but I think that’s bs.

Back in 1984 I was 16 and took a summer job at a Marina wrenching on inboard and outboard motors. The boss man had a late 70's Mercury Marquis I think, it was a great big ol' sumbich of a car at any rate was powered by a 351M-400. He always said he had a "400 Michigan" in his car. Which I thought odd and never believed or heard this before or since. What I have heard on numerous occasions is the M stands for a "Modified" 351 Cleveland turned into a 400. Which if true would make Ed's theory the correct one and the 351M-400 moniker make some sense, there only was one motor, the 400.

No I think they did know Steve. But then the internet came along and told them they were wrong.

I never fail to be amazed how much work this tiny digger, an IHI 1 and a bit tonner (2500 lbs?) can get done with its little Mitsi diesel. It's called the Wild Animal for a reason....😅
Lloyd ripped out a conifer and three Yucca stumps for me today. Load was 920kg, or 2000lbs. Well worth a few beers.
Guy at the dump took pity on us and picked them off with the grapple.
Don't plant yuccas lads.

Used to have straight 6's in them of both flavors when they had manual transmissions in them. Now a lot of v8's and v6's and everything is an automatic. Probably all the new drivers couldn't handle a three pedal anyway. For several years we did practice doing mainly right hand turns, mainly in towns, to reduce time and fuel from idling. Now with the mapping and programs they run(Orion) it doesn't care if you sit at an intersection for 10 minutes waiting to get out, it's a shorter distance. They have dumbed it down to make it where the drivers don't have to think anymore and it shows. Unfortunately they have dumbed it down to management level where the people making the decisions have never delivered a package in their life, but they have a piece of paper that says they were smart enough to pay a college for one. I told them they could wipe with their degree for all the good it does them in the real world, I don't get to live in their fantasy one.
