In between moving sprinklers around I unpacked my new toy although I probably have another 2 weeks before the first mowing on the hydroseeded lawn

I already know I’m going to have a lot of leveling to do next year and overseeding as well

I haven’t had to take care of a lawn in several decades and I’ve never had to do one from scratch

I’m burning lots of YouTube bandwidth trying to outsmart grass

Sadly I’m losing the battle of the brains

Is that one of B&S's crazy "filled with oil for life" motors Michael?

Yeah Adam

Apparently valve stem seals and piston rings are optional equipment

I’d never seen this nonsense before but apparently this is a very popular mower

My first instinct when looking into a mower was a Honda engine but apparently they have gone to $hit

After that it seemed like a crap shoot but a bunch of guys on FHC were very pleased with the self paced Toros

I guess I will see

Things are actually looking quite nice for just 2 weeks after seeding
IMG_3751.jpegIMG_3752.jpeg
The pavement prep crew kind of overshot the planned size of the driveway and the actual blacktop people built it to spec so I’m left with this along part of the edges

I’m going to have to get that extra asphalt out of there and next year get topsoil in there and seed it

Just tip it on its side once a year and drain it out the oil filler neck. Refill, mow.

I’d just rake it tight to the blacktop for a “shoulder” like a highway and then seed up to the gravel.. but that’s just me.

I like the old Lawn Boy mowers but I can attest that the newer Honda mowers seem very chintzy. If I was going to buy new I would definitely go with a Toro.

My first thought as well but probably 50% of the edge is tight up against the grass, 25% has a small gap, and the rest looks like that

I think I will use your idea next year; cut some back, clean some out, etc and just make a uniform 4-5" gravel border

OK, so another asphalt related question

The owner of the pavement company told me yesterday NOT to waste money on having it sealcoated every couple of years, DESPITE the fact his company does sealcoating

He says he has never sealcoated any of his own driveways he has built...

He said once you sealcoat you are committed to having to do it every couple of years

Thoughts?

So my real dad is a civil engineer and he did highway engineering for about 15 years before he went to commercial structures. Here's what he says- sealcoating does extend the life if the asphalt. Optimally it should be done every 2-4 years. Do not sealcoat for the first 2-3 years as the asphalt is still curing and the sealcoating will trap in the oils and cause the asphalt to pop. They generally don't sealcoat public roads because it isn't cost effective on a large scale.

I was honestly surprised that the owner told me what he did

The care and feeding handout I got from the company that was included in my "new homeowner" packet advises you to do essentially what you just said

No clue what he was all about

I've heard more and more sealcoat dissenters recently. I guarantee my dad has a textbook in his office all about sealcoating. He knows a good bit about concrete and asphalt.

Common sense would dictate that you would want to add some of those oils back into the asphalt to keep it from getting dry and brittle, plus the sealcoating makes the asphalt look nearly new.

If you have it done, you want coal tar sealer. Longer lasting and more durable than than the more environmentally friendly latex and asphalt emulsions types.
