I've heard more and more sealcoat dissenters recently. I guarantee my dad has a textbook in his office all about sealcoating. He knows a good bit about concrete and asphalt.
Common sense would dictate that you would want to add some of those oils back into the asphalt to keep it from getting dry and brittle, plus the sealcoating makes the asphalt look nearly new.
If you have it done, you want coal tar sealer. Longer lasting and more durable than than the more environmentally friendly latex and asphalt emulsions types.
The maintenance guys used that latex stuff at our condo in Hawaii some years back
It didn’t last a year
I don’t know if it was the product, or lack of prep, or what but it was a huge chunk of $$$ down the toilet
